it's a free no-risk trial. you can cancel before the first 30 days are up and not be charged a fee. got my $50 in postage, and my FREE DIGITAL SCALE arrived today! uses an included serial interface to the software, or you can use it as a standalone postal scale. also comes with a power supply. the scale MSRPs for $150, stamps.com sells it for $50. even priority mail shipping on the scale was gratis (got it in less than 1 week). so you don't have to spend a penny, and you get $50 in postage and a pretty cool scale. :D

Sorry 'bout the duplicate post. Before I did it, I searched for "postage" "scale" and "stamps.com" and didn't come up with anything in Hot Deals.

oh, that explains it. the search system here sucks really really really bad. you have to get it down to the lowest common denominator. so search for like stamp, or stamps (thats what I looked for to find the old thread cause I was wondering if you needed a promo code)

The first thing you should do is make a calibration weight in case the scale goes haywire, as mine did, and someone on Usenet said his failed twice. There's no way to simply reset the scale except by going through the recalibration procedure, which requires a weight of 10 lbs., 0.0 oz., accurate to within .05 oz. A completely empty and dry plastic bottle full of rocks works well for this, but liquid won't do. The manufacturer is Weigh-Tronix, but in two weeks they haven't responded to my e-mail.

You get to keep the scale no matter what.

The stamps.com software wasn't thought out very well, especially for printing postage, because it doesn't tell you if it's going to print right away when you click 'print' or if it will first let you set additional parameters. That makes it too easy to waste postage, even if you hit their 'cancel' button before the printing starts.

For a certain package I wanted to mail, it wouldn't tell me the exact amount for the postage but only gave a range from $7-$10. Stamps.com said this was because it didn't know the delivery distance, but I got the exact same results whether I used an origination address in California or New York. Stamps.com said there was no way to tell ahead of time what would be printed in this case, and they didn't seem to be concerned that I would waste postage (their postage, in this case).

Another annoyance is with printing labels. You can specify the row and column, but not until you click 'print', and it may not print at the specified location. Not only that, but the row and column may start advancing by themselves even before the printing starts.

Don't even think of using the minimum allowed size postcards -- the postage will be chopped off on the right side.

I'm definitely cancelling before the free trial ends, but I may mail a couple of bricks just for the heck of it.

LMC, my version of the software has a Print Sample option to check the printing before doing the actual printing. Doesn't yours have this? Couldn't you put in a piece of paper, print a sample for the address you have, and only once you've checked that it will line up do the actual printing?

I've had great luck with stamps.com, I had an account 6 months ago when I was in FL, i moved and recently set up a new account, got the free scale, have already used $48 worth of postage, the only trouble i've had is with my net connection going down (damn roadrunner) because it needs a connection to print and verify addresses, otherwise no problems.

You can cancel through their software. Don't have to talk to anyone to sign up or cancel and cancellation is immediate.

Hold the phone.

Troy over at customer service stated that you have to return the scale if you cancel before 30 days. He admitted that he could not find anything that stated that on the web site. He did state that it was company policy to return the scale.

He will get back to me.

Uh, that was a referal!

Anway -- stamps.com software works pretty good. It isn't perfect, but I use it on windows 2000 and print to a remote network printer without problems. I've done package labels and letters on my HP 930c printer without incident.

Returning the scale or get charged for it *WAS* in the sign-up agreement before, but it was taken out when I signed up about a month ago. Make sure you read the agreement thoroughly and print it out in case there's any dispute later.

So ... I signed up and got e-mail confirmation of my postal license, but how do I get the Digital Scale now ? IIRC, they said during signing up that a followup e-mail will be sent to me asking whether I want the scale or not and I will have to reply to that mail to get it. However, 3 days have passed since signing up, but I haven't got any mails in this regard yet.

What exactly did you guys do to get the scale ?

I signed up. I waited a day for my meter license to be approved. I started printing stamps. It took about 3 days to get the message saying I could get a free scale. I followed the instructions and got one from there online store from $149.95 with $149.95 off (=$0). They pick up the shipping. I got the scale in a week.

Anyway - I wanted to see if we could compare notes on calibration of the scale. Using US currency... here is what my Stamps.com scale says...

-- 4 quarters = 0.8 oz -- 4 quarters + 1 dime = 0.9 oz
-- 8 quarters = 1.6 oz -- 8 quarters + 1 dime = 1.7 oz

I am interested in getting it right so I can wieght my HP 930c ink cartridges to know when to refill them You want to refill them as close to empty but BEFORE they run dry... so doing weight makes a lot of sense.

I have a brand new HP 51645G and 51645A black ink carts. These have the original green seal on them, taken out of the box.

-- 51645G = 21ml black = 3.3oz --- 51645G = 21ml black + 1 dime = 3.4oz
-- 51645A = 42ml black = 4.1oz --- 51645A = 42ml black + 1 dime = 4.2oz

So 21ml of ink must weight .8oz, so when a black cart gets down to 2.5oz it is empty -- but with the sponge in it, I suspect 2.7oz would be safe?

Anyone else?; a dime may be too much weight, suggestions for things that people have that might weight .005 oz?

I tried one last test. I have 11 pennies, all 1995 or newer (shiny and not encrusted)

--- 10 pennies = 0.9oz --- 11 pennies = 1.0oz

It doesn't matter where I place the pennies, in two stacks of 5 or one stack of 10. These seem consistent on my scale.

From what I understand the first month is a free trial if you cancel within 29 days. But if you don't get your scale withing those 29 days you might need to wait an additional month for your scale. Changing to the simple plan would be the most cost efficient way to get your scale and cancel in the second month. ( if your just interested in the scale)

But, if you get your scale within the first 29 days then you can cancel and will not be charged $15.99 ( for the plan ). But , I'm still not sure if you can keep the scale or if you have to send it back. Either way the scale is worth $18 to me ( especially since you are getting $50 in free postage)

By the way, I just participated in this deal and can't wait to get my scale. I've been wanting one of these for a while.

For the people who have already done this deal, please post how long it took for you to receive your scale. Thanks
