tivo plus i believe is only for tivos with DVD burners in them. i don't really know about that. basically the 60 day thing is saying you have to actually activate and use the tivo service for 60 days. I think they are just trying to stop you from getting a tivo and then cancelling the service, or activating service on a tivo you buy off ebay and then getting a free box on top of that or other manipulations.

In any event, I agree, this is a good deal. The only fee you have to pay is either the 1-year + the $12 or $13 a month after that, or the lifetime, which is all you will ever have to pay. Those are the tivo fees. i have a tivo on the lifetime and love it. Like others have said, within 2 years it pays for itself. i haven't had problems with my tivo in a year+.

i'd happily take referrals too, you can PM me for my email address if you'd like. i'm a few referrals away from getting a tivo with dvd-burning capability.

What is Tivo Service vs. Tivo Plus? Which do I get for lifetime at $299?

What is this about 60 days? Thought this was a 1-year (or lifetime) deal?

What is the service fee? Is that the 1-year or lifetime fee, or something additional?

hahaha, i had signed up for the forums back in college, then just lurked and never really used them. i was recently looking to build a new computer and was like, hey, i think i have an account already. it is a bit amusing.

When the Series Two TiVo's with DVD drives in them first arrived (not all have burners; some, like mine, just play DVD's), they were bundled with free "TiVo Basic". That service level leaves out everything that makes a TiVo a TiVo. Basic does not support Season Passes and all the other goodies. For that, you need what has become known as "TiVo Plus" on those units, the full-featured TiVo service that costs $12.95 a month or $299 for the lifetime. On boxes that don't qualify for Basic, the paid service is just called "TiVo Service".

Now that TiVo is just about to begin to show a profit, they can afford to "give away the razor and sell the blades". I've always thought they could end up with tons of subscribers if they'd send everyone a TiVo with a prepaid return box, let them use it for a month, then let them keep it and subscribe or send it back. Anyone who uses one would never send it back :)

ordered mine tuesday, got it via ups today. talk about fast shipping. went for the lifetime, as someone else said, it'll pay itself off in a couple years. so far, works great. i'm going to upgrade the hard drive probably tonight, so that should be fun.

couple questions:

1) 40hrs can record how many hours in high quality mode and normal mode?
2) how big is the hard drive for 40hrs tivo? Is it upgradable?

Don't hesitate! I was skeptical about having to pay monthly fees and such but now I think it's the best deal going in TV. I've only had it a month and don't know how I would do without it. Yeah, it's that good and that convenient. Season Pass's Rock!!

I have a Tivo Series 2 box already, but am thinking of adding another to my bedroom...does anyone know if I get some kind of pricing breaking if I have 2 units or do I have to pay separate annual fees for each unit.

By the way...TIVO ROCKS!!

Neither of mine have the ads, nor do any of the units of anyone I know.

just another update, if anyone cares...

got my tivo, works great. no problems setting it up. no problems upgrading the HD to 160GB (174 hrs on low quality, 100 on medium). i'm going to upgrade it again, to a 250 gig drive. that should hold me for a while.

apparently the newer series 2 tivos (like the one i got) support more than 137GB, and the older ones don't.

this was really an awesome deal. just wish it had 2 tuners.

Ya, the lack of two tuners if what's keeping me from buying new ones. I'm currently using the two-tuner unit from Dish on my main TV just because of that one feature. It's not a TiVo, far from it, but the two tuners makes life so much easier.

if i go with this deal, would be my first tivo experience, would it just be better to go with the lifetime subscription and the 40hr unit?

A few questions for you TiVo pros, now that mine has arrived (Thanks, OP)...

Also, I am having problems with static in my Audio. Stripped the installation down to phone line, coax in from wall, and coax out to TV. Still have static. Replaced both coax. Still have static. Called CS. Suggested unplugging system. Didn't work. Now he has said that my signal must be too weak and I need a 30dB signal amplifier. Anyone else had to do this?

Lastly, they have a list of suggested wireless adapters, but I'm assuming others will work. Anyone know if this one will work?

Instructions can be found at 9thtee.com. Also at weaknees.com.

As for a wireless adapter, I have found that , if it isn't on the list here with a green thumbs up or a green check relating to your particular model, it won't work. That includes most g usb adapters.
