One of my friends agree with you, the other doesn't...

How difficult of a concept is this? You take the cap to the store that sells the soda. You give them the cap. You pay the deposit on the new soda, then leave.
Um... deposit?

(in case you didn't know, not all states have a deposit)

It kinda sorta maybe depends on your state? Just maybe.

Yeah, it depends on your state. In Canada for example, you don't pay deposit in Ontario, but you are required to pay it in Alberta.

the 'morons' are from Canada, the OP is from CA, not Canada.

They dont charge you a deposit for a 20 ounce drink in the U.S.A.
Sales tax at best.

😕

Which was my point. 😉 I only learned of the sales tax thing when I once earned a free Big Mac and it still cost me 15-20 cents. Free my ass!

I've never been charged sales tax before for winning a free pop.

umm, whats this deposit some are talking about?

Well, in some places when you buy a can or bottle of pop, a jug of milk or something similar, you pay a deposit on the bottle. When you go to the recycling center and return the bottles and stuff you've paid deposits on, you get your money back.

And what percentage of people actually return the cans and bottles?

That's besides the point. No return = no money back for you.

If you check this thread, you'll see that it adds up rather quickly.

eight months for 45 dollars. 240 days/45 = 18.75 cents a day. Going that rate, 10 years he could have 685 dollar.

Uh.

You have to pay a deposit in:

Hawaii
Iowa
Mass.
Maine
New York
Oregon
Vermont
California

And Michigan has a 10 cent deposit.

There's not a such thing as a pop (to drink)....it's a soda....or <insert name brand here>. If you're winning a free pop, you'd have to go to Sonz70 to collect.

I note the confused icon... perhaps you're confused over the English language? Someone already mentioned above that it depends on the state and specifically stated Maine is one of those states. *I* live in the U.S.of A. yet, I have to pay a deposit of 5 cents on every 20 ounce soda. Go to the store and buy a case of soda or a case of beer = $1.20 for the deposit. The deposit on milk bottles (if you should elect for glass instead of cardboard or plastic) is 50 cents.

It is not free money.

I am just getting my deposit back.

You give them 5 cents per can when you buy it, and if you return the can, you get your 5 cents back.
