lol I still need to watch that one day. I remember it being all the rage back when I was in high school.

I think it's ridiculous that you can get arrested for something of this nature, especially considering the video store is closed down. What was he even expected to do with the tape if he still has it?

I still owe a library book to my grade school, I lost the book and offered to pay for it but they said to not worry, that I'll find it. Never did. Glad I'm not in the states lol.

To me there should be a limit to how long you can wait to arrest someone for something, based on the crime. Something as silly as a late video rental should not even be a police matter in first place. Whatever the agreement is when you rent, such as paying a late fee should apply, and that's the end of that. Ex: if you don't return within xx time we charge your credit card for the movie, and you now own it, don't bother returning it.

The old ones would have a clause that say you will be charged with theft if not returned within 72hrs. Blockbustemers changed that to you bought it after 72hrs or what lever the time frame was.

What you think sheriff's office are video rental store goons?

You can add a clause saying anything, that shouldnt be how laws are constructed.

I'm failing to see how something can be theft if you've agreed that the person can have it.

How can a warrant be issued for your arrest for a fucking VHS tape? Those are worth what? 99 cents? Who took that complaint and entered it in the system? They need to be fired.

Tom Green
One of the most controversial canadians of all time.

On the one hand, he did "Freddie Got Fingered" and it was really very bad.

On the other hand, his stand up act is great, his old MTV stuff was pretty damn funny, and, I loved him in the Swearnet movie and the latest TPB movie. He is making a comeback, and I think he has found a balance that works. He rides a very fine line between annoying as fvck and funny as fvck.

wonder if its still binding since blockbuster is gone.. hmm

I know someone who was arrested for a library book that was lost.

Guys name is James Meyers.

He's an awesome Drum and Bass DJ and a buddy of mine.

I can't believe this went viral.

I remember his initial FB post when he was still sitting in his car while being pulled over and said 'so I'm about to be arrested because I have a warrant from 2002 about a VHS tape'...

It is now but the video store owner probably paid $25-35 for it. When he kept their property it became a crime. Yea, I get it's F-ing ridiculous but it seems no one took it out of the system. I had a similar experience over a $3 parking ticket, I just threw it away, then 6 years later my license was up for renewal ( they just do a vision check and issue you another license) and I had a problem. "Sir, your license is currently suspended"...huh?, why? "you did not pay that ticket and it was automatically suspended". So I had to take a cab to the county courthouse, pay the $3 plus a $10 late fee and go back to the DMV. "Sir, you'll have to take the driving exam again"...huh?, why?. "It's a form of punishment Sir". Great, out comes a 300lb Helga and I'm driving my '72 Matador rolling death-trap. She was annoyed as I was and the test was done in 5 minutes or less, lesson learned. The $3 parking ticket wound up costing me well over $100 in fines, fee's and cab fare.

This movie is a classic, I remember that my twin brother bought it back when it came to DVD, then he got married and had kids and it ended up being at my house.

My favorite part is the make your daddy proud part at the beginning of the show.

The guy is lucky there's no jail time though. This whole situation is so ridiculous, but being America I'm not even surprised. They get a hardon for "bringing justice" to people even over ridiculously petty crimes.

I'm just wondering what they even expected him to do, even if he had the tape. The store is closed! I wonder if he could get the case dismissed if he brought it to court. "I tried to bring it back but it's a pet store now!"

You would think this would be a civil matter and not something they'd be able to arrest him over. Would have been a lot less strange had he simply been subpeonaed for a court date.

I'm guessing that actually is why he got arrested. They likely took him to court over this way back then and he no-showed and so they probably issued a warrant for his arrest.

That's why people are getting arrested over things like student loans now, they get subpoenaed to appear in court and don't and then some courts issue warrants to compel them to appear. Several states have actually passed laws specifically to prevent that from happening since its just stupid and clogs up the courts, and then fucks over people that already couldn't afford to pay with fines (that can then lead to a jail cycle as they can't afford to pay their fines for that, so then get arrested again).

I'm honestly surprised that their system showed that it was over a VHS tape. I'd even say there's something a bit fishy about this story since I can't fathom how this makes any sense, but then there's plenty of instances of situations that make no sense with regards to our legal justice system.

Not sure anyone would take someone to court over a video tape, but you're definitely right about the risk of missing a court date.

I used to work somewhere that required me to check people for law enforcement hits. A lot of people that had them were the result of simple traffic violations that the person never paid the ticket for or showed up in court for.

How are these summons usually sent? I get lot of fake court summons emails that I just delete, well they just go straight to spam folder. I wonder how easy it is to miss these or think they're fake and just trash them. I guess for something like a movie rental they'd have your physical address too though and send it there instead?
