I'm a little surprised that Allstate isn't helping you out more. They know you're up-to-date & have proof. You'd think they would have experience with something like this.

Bizarre. How can insurance only upload once every six months? Coverage expires daily...
Would you explain "Coverage expires daily" to someone that's not that bright?
You renew your policy every 6 months... aren't you good for that period?

I mean insurance is pegged to your birthday and there are people born everyday. Thus there are policies expiring or renewed everyday. Not you personally but the whole jurisdiction as a whole.

They're sending the DMV the official form they want (electronically). He said it didn't make sense either. We've had the same three cars on the policy for 18 months, and the other two cars on the policy didn't have an issue. Insurance wise the car is covered on Allstate's side, it seems like there was some kind of system glitch or something. It just sucks that the DMV didn't mail the letter until after the respond by date. If they had mailed it out on time, this could have easily been rectified without the plates being cancelled.

All the insurance policies I've had are for a period of 6 months, and as long as a person pays the premium on time every month (or all up front for a small discount), they are covered for that 6 months. My homeowners insurance is yearly, and I guess at least NC didn't declare imminent domain on my property, and take it over a glitch in their system. :p

I think what Spacehead is indicating is put the ownership on your insurance to fix the issue/fees. If it is their job to report your paid policy in the first place, then they can fix this issue and eliminate the fee, no? Otherwise.... I would go with another insurance agent that is willing to do a small meager task like that...

I'll see hows things happen concerning that.

Sure the glitch could have been on Allstate's side, or it could have been the DMV's system. At the moment I'm leaning on it being the DMV's issue since they can't seem to mail out a letter on time. They dated the letter July 27, yet the mailed date is August 7th.

Finally some good news from this mess. I still wasn't able to call and reach anyone at the state DMV office, and the message I sent was never responded to.

I logged into their website (pay your penalty) today using the information they sent on the letter, and it now cleared (I assume my insurance agent was able to do whatever was needed to get the penalty cleared and the plate reinstated).

I really do think it would be a good idea if NC sent letters for serious matters like revoking license plates via some kind of certified mail (or at least send them out before "respond by" date is already passed).

Maybe up in the great frozen north...but here in the US of A, you can buy insurance on ANY day...and unless it automatically renews, it expires on a set date (unless you don't pay)...not on your birthday...so, yes, insurance expires every day...

it's the same here in Ontario. My insurance year starts August 1. My birthday is September 28.

Pretty sure what he's getting at is that just about every day is 6 months for somebody.

Really? Here, only driver's license is tied to your birthday. Car registration is tied to purchase date.
Thinking is you renew driver's licence, health card and vehicle registration on the same date, hard to forget your own birthday. First registration is almost always prorated.

I suggest you say, "Innocent until proven guilty". Wait this one out and try to connect after COVID kills off the idiots that haven't been doing their jobs and this shows up on an audit somewhere.

I had a less serious question that I couldn't resolve online, and there is no way to actually call a local "tag office". Their long recording at local offices is a 5 minute speel with hours, websites, cash or check only, etc., etc., then it hangs up.

So call the Raleigh DMV. 5+ minutes in the phone tree from hell, then listen to crappy music forever... actually by the timer on my phone 48 minutes... but I did resolve my problem.

That's who I tried calling. Although there was no music after being placed on hold. Every time it was dead silence until their system ended the call.

I'm just glad it got straightened out, and my son can drive his car and when don't have to worry about his car getting towed if police ran his tag for whatever reason.

After I saw the issue was cleared, I messed with my son a bit. He thought I was going to have to drop him and pick him up from his summer job, and when he asked if the plate issue was fixed, I told him we had to make an appointment with the local DMV office (by appointment only right now, and usually 30+ days out). He had the look of defeat in his eyes until I told him it was fixed. I got a big time eye roll, along with very sarcastic "You're just so funny". :p

Why have kids if you cannot mess with them.

So today August, 28th I got a notice from the mortgage company that my mortgage due in 4 days is late.

I tried calling the Washington department of licensing since I have to get a new driver's license, you don't even get to be put on hold unless you're one of the "lucky ones", they play a message about how they can't place any more people on hold.
