Wow...7-story wave?!

How tall is your average cruise ship? I'm trying to get a relationship between the ship and the wave.

I read about this yesterday - pretty amazing stuff. The captain had never seen anything like it in 20+ years.

Extreme weather & geological events seem to happen more consistently lately. maybe it's just better coverage & reporting though. hmm.

Tall. They are absolutely enormous. The last one I was on had 13 stories that were accessible to the public. Maybe Sharkeeper could tell us exactly.

I'm watching it on CNN right now. Apparently one of the waves was 73 feet high and took out hundreds of rooms and the restaurant. The company (what else is new) only offered a 25% reduction for their next cruise. The passengers on CNN will never take another cruise ship again. They are seeking legal advice as they want a full refund...and they should get it!:|

The Ship is supposed to Dock around noon in NY with about 2200 passengers still left on it. There are like news crews waiting for them to arrive but from what i hear they will still have to wait about 3 more hours to get off the ship due to customs.

Edit: some of the passengers called a radio station(the ones that gof off in SC) and said they were even playing the TitanTic song ha ha.

The "freak waves" happen when various waves collide just right in the middle of an open ocean. They were speculation and rumor until they got some satallite pictures of some, and even the scientists were amazed at the size. They suspect that a number of ships sinking was caused by them. I mean, if your ship isn't f'ing huge, it's going down without warning.

MSNBC is saying 50% off now and 50% off of a future cruise.

As a measure of goodwill, perhaps, but it's ludicrous to hold the cruise ship operator responsible for a marine incident that cannot be controlled or predicted.

FWIW, the uppermost deck of Royal Caribbean's Voyager-class ships stands around 175' above the surface of the water. The living quarters top out around 120'.

Picture a hotel with 17 floors. But it floats. Now picturing a wave that stands half as tall.

The wave was probably more than halfway up the ship that got it.

The company didn't make the wave.

They should haul that bitch known as "mother nature" into court and take her for every dime she has!

Sounds about right. Very fair actually.

Why would anyone act like the cruise line is responsible? WTF are they supposed to do about 70' tall waves?!?

The ships do travel in the ocean, in case anyone was unaware.

it's probably just the cruise co. making sure they get some return customers... just a nice thing to do from a corporate perspective. at least a partial refund gives the customers some kind of pittance for their rough ride.

News story above says they get 50% refund and 50% off another cruise. Considering they had 90% good cruise I can see why that's the current offer, although I'm not sure I agree. Tough call because it's really NOT the cruise lines fault.

Anyway, I doubt the passengers want to go on another cruise regardless of price. A full refund probably will be given to the passengers, and a few will sue them for unsafe conditions, etc, etc, and try and get more than their fair share too.

uh, the cruise ship people company has no control over nature. why should they offer anything more than 50% off this cruise and 50% off future cruises?

sharkeeper have cgi from wavetrackeriii output can do overlay and post it. He very busy right now!

You sir need to have your title changed to shadow. Quit following me!

I can do some graphics but don't have the time right now.

70~80 feet is the figure that's out currently. This is a major rogue wave. The ship was VERY lucky that just two windows were breached. If you're ever been on a cruise liner and have seen the windows you know it takes an amazing force to take them out. 16mm thick fire certified tempered glass is quite strong. If I could punch mine out I would seriously consider a career as a professional heavyweight boxer.

Taking out lots of rooms? LOL CNN typical fearmongering reporting. Shouldn't this be in P&N already? When the water reaches that high there will be lots of flooding as the water can reach to internal public areas before it can drain off deck scuppers. When a window is breached obviously there will be higher losses.

It was VERY rough in the "graveyard of the Atlantic" beginning Friday AM. By early Sat morning (the time of the incident) a whole gale was blowing straight out of just east of due north. The rips were strong all the way to Miami. Leaving Port Everglades Saturday night (even though it was breezy) didn't seem so bad until we got 2 miles offshore and bam it was NASTY. I could only imagine what it was like going headfirst into those seas like that. It was also WORSE further north.

The Atlantic is no easy ride this time of the year.

Is it normal when you go a cruise from NY down south to experience rough seas all the time? A lot of people called in saying how bad this cruise line was and how they spend almost 48 on bumpy seas.
