Fraunhofer MP3 encoding and variable bit rate (VBR). Avoid?

iTunes 2 on my iBook has the same functionality or maybe a better functionality than AudioCatalyst, but has the benefit of using Fraunhofer. It has also the settings for VBR encoding, but I've heard on the PC side that Fraunhofer VBR isn't so great. True or not? If true, does this apply to Apple's implementation of Fraunhofer VBR as well?

If true, I'll just use CBR 224 or 256. I don't know if Apple has optimized Fraunhofer's encoding for speed or for quality either, so I'm a bit hesitant to use the 192 setting. At lower bit rates, speed-optimized and quality optimized MP3s aren't hard to tell apart. Encoding on my 600 MHz G3 in OS X is about 3X or something at 160 CBR.

/me wants an iPod, but wish it had a 10+ GB drive and it worked with my PC...

Fraunhofer isn't bad. I use Musicmatch most of the time to encode MP3s, and it sounds good.

Lame is better mostly with VBR, but with CBR I can't hear the difference.
