Fraudulent domain e-mails..

I don't really have my own domain name, but I've had a bunch of customers call in saying other registrars are e-mailing them to pay them a fee to renew their domain..however their domain is currently with us. Does anyone else who own domain(s) get these kinds of e-mails ?

Most of them seem quite reputable, in that you can actually register domains with them, but how is this legal to do?

I've gotten those, the forms actually ask you to renew and transfer, so its probably borderline legal, but its definiatly sneaky. Its similar to the slamming that occurs with phone services.

Or when the Vegas paper was going door to door. They'd ask, "would you like a free paper?" and if you said yes they'd get your info, then mention that you'll get free papers for the first week and then be automatically billed. My friends heard that part and said, "whoa there, nevermind, take us off the list," yet the guy never did and they didn't find out until recently. They've now got a bill from the paper for a hefty sum. Not sure how that'll turn out in court.

It's amazing the crap companies get away with.
