Frats, worth it or not?

this is true, i was in a frat in college. i loved it, it was a great experience. the common thing you get on here is that you are paying for your friends. Its not like that at all, anyone who is in one will tell u that.

its what the whole college experience is about, getting drunk and doing crazy stuff.

i'd give it a try, if you dont like it you can always just quit.

my sentiments exactly. I enjoyed being in a fraternity when I was in college. The myth of "paying for friends" still exists, but I think the same could be said of anyone going to a college anywhere. You are paying money to live in a certain area and live around certain people. That doesn't deter people from going to college, so you shouldn't let it stop you from enjoying greek life.

It must be the immigrant in me talking, but I figured college was about getting an education!

do you mean worth getting killed in a hazing incident? sure, join a fraternity so they can humiliate you and kill you by forcing you to do something stupid that kills you

It depends, both on you and on the particular organization. I joined an atypical fraternity, loved it, and still consider myself an active member even after graduating. I also consider the other guys in my chapter at UGA (and many others that I've met from around the country) family.

But again, ymmv. If nothing else, you could give rush a shot and see how things go from there.

It was that he got the paddle up TEH BUTT! OUCH!

First off, its usually much cheaper to live in a frat than an apartment or dorm. You don't have to worry about driving anywhere to party because the party is usually at your place, or one of the houses next door.

The paying for your friends bullsh!t is just that, bullsh!t. I joined my house because I was already friends with all those people. Most houses don't haze at all, and the ones that do suck and you should not join.

There is a lot more than being in a frat than drinking. I've been here for 2 months and i have only been drunk 3 or 4 times. Its not like we are all getting blasted or anything.

Ah, frats and sororities. Drunkenness, stupidity, idiocy, and STDs/ultimate promiscuity...the apex of human waste 😛 And let us not forget the moronic hazing and the stunts that go with it.

No. Not worth it.

College is for an education. Maybe this is a newsflash to some, but whatever. I'm going to be going to a Community College next year for fire training, but even if I was going to a full-blown University/College, I still wouldn't waste my time with some stupid fraternity.

Edit: Then again, there may be some that have something of value tied to them. So I guess it depends on what the frat is all about and what they do, as stated in miketheidiot's post above.

Not true at all. I pay $375/month for my apartment and I only live 1 mile off campus. Most of the frats around here are practically across the street and they charge $475/month + utilities. + membership fees. And believe me my apartment is way nicer than the places they are staying.

Isn't someone going to hop in and talk about the great networking it provides?

I mean, COME ON! Who doesn't want job opportunities which could possibly go to someone more qualified and more in need just because you know someone up on the ladder.

I gotta eat too buddy.
Success in the business world is about who you know. So you can bitch about how un-fair it is or you can go out and network.

That being said, I'm not going to join a frat.

don't get me wrong, there is a lot of drunkenness and promiscuity (although no stds, oddly) we do the same things everyone else does, only we to it in a place that works out better for us.
