I was in a fraternity. Bad idea. You're in college to learn. If you're there primarily to party, you should just go home. Most fraternities where I went to college where all about the booze and distracting one from their studies.

totally wrong...the fraternity GPA at my school was higher than the dorm/all U GPA. And if you'll look at my post above...40% Engineering Students....hmmm....oh, and IMO, Engineers drink more than most

Obviously, its my fault for joining and not managing my time well. I found that the fraternity was a distraction from learning and our GPAs proved it. If a person is not good with their time or has poor study habits, a fraternity is a very bad idea.

Your experience was obviously different, but I would advise any freshman to at least wait a year before joining. Then they can see if they'd have an experience like mine or like yours.

Several fraternities (including the one I'm apart of) are getting very strict with grades. There are mandatory study hours for all members and mandatory advisement meetings with the Academics chair to see how you're doing. If you do poorly, or fall below a certain level, you are not allowed to attend the social gatherings until your grades improve.

I'm in a frat, and i think its one of the better decisions i made since i've been at school. I'm not much of a party animal, nor a heavy drinker. My Primary concern is school.

I really like being in the frat. I don't force it on my friends who are non greek. I think it has made me a better person since i've joined.

Maybe i can describe my experience and why i joined after i graduate, but riight now, i don't think i can.


Also, when i rushed, there was no hazing, and there is still no hazing going on. Not even in the slightless. I was anti greek just becuase of the hazing.

Alright guys I want to share my fraternity story. Yes I am in one for starters. I am an junior at Virginia Tech and I am in FIJI. I am a computer engineer, I have a 3.7 overall GPA and I don't get smashed every night of the week. I didn't do it until my sophmore year because I had my doubts, but I really have enjoyed it. There are plenty of fraternities that do all that sh*t that people have mentioned, but you just have to find the right one. I don't wear pink polos and I don't pop my collar, some of the guys do but they are definitely the minority.

Its funny that the trend is that many people who arent in one, or never have been, have nothing but negative things to say about them, but it seems like every person who is in a fraternity loves it, and have good GPA's, aren't major drinkers, and just good people.

Prejudice is fun isnt it?

I was in a frat, Kappa Alpha, for a month but then me and the rest of our pledge class got arrested for one of our initiation pranks. Spent 14 hours in county jail for stupid #*$%. After that I decided not to join back till at least the next year. The "brothers" acted like they never knew me and treat me like %)$#. Then I realized that it's nothing but a bunch of BS.

I dont like frats... but I was kinda in a huge one at The Citadel when I think about it.

We were also considered one of the worst binge drinking colleges in the country...

not particularly true..i think the sterotypes of greek life..are sometimes absurd. its not the questions of payying to have friends..i have plenty of friends outside of the fraternity..its more membership dues that cover insurance..parties..mixers..happy hours etc...

as far as the whole liver and std thing goes...im the vice president of my organization..dont drink or smoke...have been on the deans list for my entire college career..and this is fairly consistent with many people in greek organizations...

like anything else..greek life is what you make of it...dont be soo quick to play on the stereotypes..think critically and for yourself...

Thats not a very big school, my highschool was 1/2 that size.

I'm not in FIJI (I'm part of PKT), I'm just friends with a few brothers there and they don't seem any more secretive than other fraternity brothers.

The prejudice and ignorance in this thread is amazing. DON'T TALK ABOUT SHT YOU DON'T KNOW ABOUT.

Paying for friends = bs. Fraternity dues in my org are 400/semester. That includes ~3 exchanges or equivelent a month + rush. Less than the cost of say, going to a club or something similar.

Time issue (aka my grades suck now) = your pledge program didn't teach you how to manage your time.

Drugs/Alcohol/Sex = it's going to be around no matter where you go.


All fraternities are different. The trick is to find the one that best suits you. I have a tighter group of friends now than I ever did.

we have a chapter of sigma phi omega here @'sc; they are definately pretty hot. But kappas are hotter

A frat is like any other activity you can do in college, it's all about picking the thing that's right for you. I think frats work well for some people, and I see no real problem with the good ones. That being said, there is nothing I found more annoying in college than the frat guys who were obsessed with how cool being in a frat was. And there were a few too many of those guys to totally ignore.

To sum up, frats=fine. Vocal minority of frat guys=annoying as fvck.
