Fraternities and sororities - what is the point to them?

I live in the US but I was not born in here.
To me both fraternities and sororities are kind of like inches, feet, miles, and the Fahrenheit scales: they do not make any sense, but you learn to accept them out of the respect for the new home country, still I do not get the point...

In America, and the rest of the world... it's not what you know, it's who... and frats and sororities give you a HUGE network...

just wish i had known that earlier.

So far in my professional career I've had 2 jobs. I shot out a total of 5 emails to my alumni which have led to both jobs.

Another alumni hit me up a few days ago asking if i was interested in big4

connections > you

(it was also the greatest 3 years of my life. sex drugs and rock and roll for sure)

It's for all the cool kids(and kids who were dying to be cool) from high school that feel the need to maintain their standard of social status.

Can you join frat after you graduate?

what's the point?

I'm not gonna extend a helping hand to someone that's clearly there only to leech the connections. I am going to extend a helping hand to someone who spent 3 years working in the fraternity.

frats aren't the only way to get connections. there are plenty of professional societies too... for instance IEEE for CS/EE folk and so on.

The difference is professional societies don't throw 8 keg parties during rush.

Just depends on what you're looking for.

Fraternity at a small/midsize school isn't a big deal. It's basically a reason to drink 7 days a week.

Fraternity at a large school known for its greek system is a status symbol, given that you get into one of the top ones. One of my good friends, who went to UI Urbana Champaign, said the guys in the top fraternities pulled major ass and basically the only reason they got in was because they were rich kids who could give a lot of money back in the future.

and provide women 24/7/365....

meh, the women part was over rated if you ask me.

My roomates were all in a big frat, and I got invites to thier "Exclusive" parties. In the long run the regular, non-frat parties were better for picking up women because the chicks who go to frat parties were a bunch of stuck up snobs, who knew the party was just a big set up for guys to try and get with them.

Part of it depends on the school too. Went to visit a friend a BGSU, picking up slutty sorostitutes there was like shooting fish in a barrel.

You don't need to be in a frat to use alumni connections. I got my first tech job by cold calling a fellow alumni who was a VP at a major tech company.

pay to be part of a group of people. This happens throughout life....not just fraternities/sororities in college.
