FRAPS question

This is not a problem per se, I just want to know if my Age of Mythology game (which is limited to 76 FPS) is because of the game, or is it because my 19" LCD has a 76hertz refresh rate. Does anyone know if FRAPS FPS would be limited by my refresh rate? It kinda makes sense to me that it is, but now I'm really curious 😛.

TY in advance.

Should only be limited if you have Vsync enabled, this will prevent the FPS from ever exceeding your monitor's refresh rate.

Thankyou for that, I'm now getting 170+ FPS in game, not that I notice a huge difference of course, but I learned something. Cheers mate 😀

there are some issues with turning off vsync. you may get some glitches in the screen, or tearing. but, thats rare.

just a FWIW, I can get upwards of 70fps in Battlefield 2 with Vsync-->off.
average ~50fps with Vsync enabled and honestly, it plays and looks much smoother with Vsync enabled and a slower refresh rate. Just my personal experience with LCDs.

Acutally it isn't rare at all, espesially if he is getting 170+ fps at 75hz which would come out to around 10 tears every 4 frames. Granted that will all happen so quick that most people won't even notice it, but all the same tearing without vsync isn't rare by any means. 😉

Obviously I will leave it on for that game. But it is good to know that turning it off can increase performance if my system is struggling.

yeah, its not really like you can tell the difference between 75 fps and 170 fps. only if with vsync enabled you get really really low fps you should disble it.

Agreed. Also, major fps drops shouldn't be much of a problem at all with Vsync on, as long as you have Triple Buffering enabled (which Nvidia finally added to their latest drivers!). I used to game with Vsync off on my old CRT's, but the tearing is just awful on my LCD. I  Vsync. 😉

If you don't like the tearing then look to triple buffering first when trying to improve performace. That just takes a little bit of video ram and other than that will get the same framerate as without vsync aside from being capped at your refresh rate.
