Francis and Ming All-Star game starters? Puuuleeeeze!

I know it is a popularity contest and they want to make the fans more involved with the sport, yada yada yada. But it is debateable whether Ming should start and Stevie Franchise should have even made the team. Popularity votes should only be a percentage of determining who is on the team, and the starters should be VOTED upon by both coaches and players. Ming would still have played to please the huge Chinese(Asian) community here and abroad. And we could have had more deserving PG's on the team than Francis. I won't be watching the game either. There's no point. It's not about who is the best or most deserving. :| And then sportswriters use all-star appearances in determining who makes the hall of fame, which is ridiculous considering how unqualified players get voted in every year, and more deserving players get shafted!

i really have no idea how francis made the team. he blows chunks... i should know. he is on my fantasy basketball team. 😛 i would have thought that bibby or nash would be voted in before francis.

if pro sports were all about the sports, then we wouldn't have this problem. but of course, there's that "economy" thing getting in the way. =/

For the record, shaq actually beat Yao ming in the number of internet votes, but not in total votes. So the percentage of yao's votes coming from overseas is not as big a factor. besides, shaq is injured.

it's been like this for some time now and besides, the all-star game sucks anyway cuz they all hold back and don't even play to their fullest. why? because why should they strain themselves for a game that doesn't mean anything towards their goal of NBA finals? just boycott it like I did with the superbowl. i watched a total of 5 mins of the SB. whee.

I agree that Cassell should've gotten the starting spot but Yao and Shaq are debatable.

jamal magliore... nuff said. fans are dumb anyway. you will always have wanks like yao and stevie francis making the team because A) they have an assload of fans of B) they can dunk. I must say that i was pleased to see that brad miller got a spot. he definitely deserves it with the way he has played this year. It will be fun to see lebron and melo own everyone else in the rookie game. heh.

There is a large contingent of Asian Americans that voted Yao in because he was Asian. All of my Asian friends that follow basketball didn't care if Yao was the best player, they just wanted to see him start. They all said "Yeah Shaq is a better player right now, but I want to see Yao play". In other words, the best player is not starting the game. Therefore, the All-Star game is a joke.

I personally don't think it's debateable. Yao has pretty good numbers, but Shaq is still clearly the better player. It's the same difference between Olajuwan and Shaq in Shaq's earlier years. Olajuwan schooled him pretty bad but Shaq got better over time. Yao will only get better, but at this point in time, Shaq should start.

I am a fan, and I think Shaq should start because he is more deserving. So how is allowing popularity to determine starters not representative of fan's views? Because we have people voting based on reasons OTHER than play on the hardwood. Like Asian Americans voting for Yao because he is Asian. The reason for All-Star game is to see the best players.

yes you are...Since he plays PF for kings most of the time..(When Divac is on the court)

I don't see what the problem is, the all-star game is basically for the people.
It's a game where players show boat their skills.
Who cares if Shaq doesn't start ?

People use all-star stats when talking about players years down the line. It goes on your hall of fame credentials, and after a player retires, a player is normally introduced or written up as xxx, a 5 time all-star or whatever.

It's for the fans, but at the same time getting into the all-star game means something. They need to find a balance.
