Oysters Can Be Dangerous!

PARIS, France (Reuters) -- Anxious to show vigilance after being criticized in August for failing to warn the public of an impending heatwave, France's national health watchdog issued a stern warning Tuesday about the dangers of opening oysters.

"Numerous severe accidental injuries take place during the opening of oysters, which are consumed in particularly large quantities during end-year festivities," the INVS watchdog said in a statement.

It said some 2,000 people cut themselves each year while trying to pry open oysters, 800 of them in December or January. Around 20 percent of such accidents require hospital treatment.

"One should, wherever possible, try to prevent such accidents happening, by taking simple precautions," the INVS said.

"Sit yourself down comfortably with an oyster knife and the appropriate know-how, and either use hand protection or get an oyster-seller to open them."

The French slurp down thousands of oysters, many of them farmed off the west coast, over the Christmas and New Year period.

French authorities have taken pains to give the public advance warning of the risks of floods and cold weather, as well as a flu epidemic, after failing to warn of the dangers of an August heatwave that killed 15,000 mainly elderly people.

Rumor has it that Chirac will make another major announcement next week: Don't run with scissors.

If its about France, its most likely been posted by Galt who blames the weather on Chirac. Always good for a laugh. Merry Christmas!

Maybe we can color code the stupidity of some P&N posts too. Running dangerously into the red I see . . .

The US issues warnings like this all the time:

I was being facetious, sir :) Why, then, didn't they take action when they knew the heat was coming and had similar problems previously? Why, then, did Chirac and his Health Minister run to Canada and stay in the AC room knowing that thousands of elderly were at risk because of their inaction? Why, then, did they not extend the mandatory work weeks in anticipation of this disaster [granted, the did when they got back and the blunt of the heatwave had passed...ex post reaction]? Why, then, did they not have a plan in place to combat these atrocities and mitigate the loss of innocent life? That was the point, but I guess you missed it. They issue oyster warnings, but failed to take action and prevent 3000% more deaths than the U.S. has suffered in Iraq.

What about the 25,000 Iranians killed in the recent earthquake? Clearly Galt, Khamenei and Khatami deserve blame when they've ignored the horrifying results of earthquakes in their remote provinces in the past and did nothing to mitigate the danger. No retrofitting, no warnings to residents in the older cities, no attempts to subsidize housing that is EQ-resistant and no well-trained and well-equipped rescue teams prepared to handle the aftermath.

What a tragedy.

I agree, except with the "subsidize housing" part.
