France and Germany Agree To Help Reduce Iraqi Debt

If they do this for Iraq, then we should reconsider the contracts thing. I would be proud of those nations if they did, and as would most of us.

Perhaps now would be a good time to change the contracts thing...

Hell no. France and Germany got most of their Iraqi debt illegally. They should be taken to task for that. The same can't be said for Russia (via the Soviet Union).

The contract ban should stay until they behave more correctly in the future.

did your mentor told you that???

got any proof of that?

They probably heard it on the Rush Limbaugh show -- if Majarushdie says it then you know it is true 😛

His democrat source probably told him 😉 (sorry Dari - couldn't resist!)

Proof tends only to be needed around here when your viewpoint contradicts the "obvious underhand" nature of those you support. In other cases "come on, call a cigar a cigar" - you only want proof because you know it can't be supplied. "You'd have to be a moron to not see he's playing us for fools..."

There's a lot of this at the moment.

I agree - proof needs to be supplied by both sides. Unless it's to do with WMD, then it's national security and we can't know the reasons we suspect - just the basics.

Probably gone a bit overboard with all of that! Consider a watered-down-less-frustrated-with-the-hipocrasy-of-some-comparable-threads-in-this-forum version!

Deep breaths In, .... Out, In, .... Out 😱 Composure regained 🙂

Bush wants the money the US pays for rebuilding to be in the form of grants. No repayment required.
It is the democrats who had been arguing against that and pushing to make it loans instead of grants.

First the dems say "This war is all about oil and making money", then they say "Iraq should have to pay us back with oil revenues".
Ironic isn't it.

EDIT: I like your sig Marty. I didn't realize you thought CNN should be nuked.

Yes, but we're talking about forgiving any past debts, aren't we? Doesn't it seem a little off to you that we are going around asking others to erase any debt to them when we haven't done so ourselves. From what I understand, Iraq owes us around $2 Billion for loans to them during their war with Iran. Ironic, isn't it?

Ive been listening to it on the radio, Bush has been pushing it for weeks

I know he's been pushing for other countries to forgive their debts, but I haven't heard of him pushing for the US to do the same. I'll go read the transcripts of his last few radio addresses...in the meantime, if you or anyone else has a link saying that Bush has been pushing for the US to forgive any debt owed to it, I'd appreciate it if you could post it.

I'll be sure to let you know what I find in the radio transcripts. 😉

Shanti, did you see the Daily Show yesterday by any chance? They were showing how MSNBC created a full scale replica of saddam's hole and had a retired general and a stupid bitch talking about it (with the bitch climbing in and 'reporting'). The absurdity of it all was mind boggling!

I wouldn't mind them if they actualy reported the news (god knows there's enough happening in the world to fill 24 hrs), but what they do is they pick a few stories and they report on them so much it becomes a circus!

Yes, they should all go.

From the article:
Japam: 4.1B
US: 2.2B
France 5B
Germany 2.4B
Italy 1.7B
Russia 4B

Interesting to note that the bulk of the debt (100B out of 120B) is owed to SA and Kuwait in reparations.

I dont know why we would not forgive the debt, we are currently spending billions rebuilding Iraq.

But doesn't it seem odd that we just wouldn't come right out and say "The slate is wiped clean" then? It seems like we are waiting to see what the other countries decide to do first. Just seems like "Well, we're not going to do it unless you do it too."

Do you think we would not wipe the slate clean?

Probably...if others do. I really don't know for sure. Like you said, I don't see why, if we went to all this trouble, and spent all this money, why we wouldn't. But I also don't understand why we aren't/weren't the first to forgive our debt, either. It seems like it'd be more convincing to others if we did. I don't know.

Maybe we are more interested in getting others to forgive.
