FragnStein or SFX Frag Pro controllers for PS3?

Anyone use the FragnStein or SFX frag pro type controllers? How are they? I see the SFX Frag thing got bad reviews on Amazon and the fragnstein got pretty decent ones.

I totally suck at FPS or 3rd person type shooter games on PS3 when using a controller. Moving back and forth is fine, but moving and aiming is extremely difficult. My character looks like he's having a seizure when playing.

I think having a mouse type controller to handle aiming and still using the analog stick for movement would work well, but I don't have much confidence in what i hear regarding these products.
 
I have a FragnStein, and while it is not bad, it's not that close to seeming like you're playing a PC game. It's just not possible because of how console games are. That being said, without a doubt it is better than using the PS3 analog.

I use it for Killzone 2, because that game aims HORRIBLY. The mouse makes it a lot more bearable, but it still not like PC game.

The best thing is that the middle mouse button (scroll wheel) can be pushed left and right which simulates moving the analog sticks at 100%. This makes for very quick turns. So generally I move the mouse for accurate shots, but most of my major movements are with the mouse wheel.

Hopefully that makes sense.

It has many settings, so that you can fine tune it. It's hard to find the right balance between mouse and in-game sensitivity. If you have mouse sensitivity too low then you cannot finely aim, as the mouse will not detect slight movements AT ALL. But if you have the mouse sensitivity up really high, then you have to turn the in-game sensitivity down. And then the middle mouse will barely move you - so you will not be able to turn very well.

I guess ideally, if you mastered it, you'd have both mouse and in-game sensitivity up rather high. But then movements are very significant, and you'd have to be really presice at making small movements lest your aimer fly everywhere.

And you can use the FragnStein on the PC, which is nice.

PS. The Drivers are a pain in the ass to figure out. You need drivers if you want to change buttons, update the firmware. You'll get it after some head banging, but be forwarned.
 
I was hoping something like this might allow me to enjoy those types of games on a console, because now its just frustrating and I don't play ps3 games much any more because I hate the controls.

You can actually use the XIM360 with a PS3 if you have the right adapter. I was just informed of this myself. Look for CEOrko's post in this thread: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2070464&page=2

If you are only interested in a KB/M solution for the PS3 specifically, the original XIM with a PS2-PS3 adapter will work. Be careful though if you choose to go that route as only certain ones still work. Check this tread: http://xim360.com/community/index.php?topic=2388.0

From what i've read the yobo adapters still work.

Anyway it goes, i'd highly suggest getting an XIM over any of the other adapters if you want to get similar results to a PC.
 
Another vote for the XIM over anything else.

I just got my XIM for the PS3 kit today. If you want I'll let you know how it works I think a few more are available where I bought my kit from. Think I paid $89.

My kit was a shake out of the box and play one so no assembly or modding needed.

EDIT: Wait I just checked seems they are all sold out. :-/

if you are good with soldering get the chip and a ps2 cord and DIY.... in addition you'll need a PS2 - USB for the ps3.

any1 play mw2 on psn? hit me up....
 
Ok I got my xim up and running in about 3 minutes after opening the box.

All I can say is WOW! I think Ill have to get a xim 2 for my x360 now. I am happy with this purchase.

EDIT: Dont judge it by when you first hook it up, you got to tweek it to your liking. Never will be as good as a mouse and KB on the pc but gets as close as you are going to get it. 🙂

Well that link you posted is similar to the one I bought. You can either buy the components and build your own or buy a pre-built one. I bought a pre-built from ebay.

Here is the unit with the Yobo adapter. Left side goes into the PS3, right to the PC.

Here is the housing for the XIM, mine is a little different than the one on the sale you posted though. It has a little light on the left had side (You can barly see it) to show it's powered on. But that one should work fine.

You have to have it conected to your PC and your PC has to be on while using it, laptop should work too. This is very usefull while you fine tune the setting and make profiles for each game. XIM2 has to be connected to a powered on PC from what I understand. I have read that XIM3 might not need a powered on PC but it's supposed to only be for x360. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions or get one and have trouble hooking it up.

I'm confused as to how this actually works then...so you connect this xim device to your pc and the ps3? Where do you plug in the mouse and keyboard then? On the PS3? but if this is connected to the PS3, then I only have 1 usb port left...do I also need a usb hub or something?

1. Yes, Correct

2. Mouse and Keyboard connect to the PC, which is why the PC is needed.

Edit: what i meant to say was the xim works the same as the XIM2/xim360 video but you have a little black box instead of the 360 controller. If you have a ps3 the xim 1 is your best option.

yea it can be, for me every tv in my house has a computer hooked up so it was no problem, I have the xim tuned now so its just about as good as if I was on the computer.

I had the FragFX v2 and used it to play MAG.

1) There's no "microaiming" - what PC gamers would probably call precision. I couldn't make small adjustments when aiming - at least in MAG.

2) There was a learning curve. It took awhile to figure out. When I started I was actually -WORSE- than I was with a controller. Once I got it working though...

3) I didn't really like using it. It felt cheap, didn't work particularly well, and really didn't make the experience more enjoyable.

Sitting back in the couch with a controller was more fun than using the fragFX to play.

I personally wouldn't recommend it. I did hear better things about the Fragnstein but it's so much more expensive. I heard the FragFX is better in other games. In the end I just kept playing with the controller, and still suck but am at the point where I can at least have fun.
 
Since no one seems to be selling these XIM units all put together, I just ordered the parts to build my own. I've never used a soldering iron before so I hope I don't screw this up.

I saw that a company called XCM makes a product called an XFPS force 4.0 that seems to act as a XIM, but couldn't find much info on it to see how well it works. They also make the XFPS rateup, which would be perfect since it doesn't require a the use of a PC also, but the reviews for this seem to be pretty poor.

So the XIM card costs about $30
The Yobo Joy Box cost me $15
The PS2 controller cost me $6
The plastic enclosure cost me about $12
All prices included shipping.

If my dad or a friend has a soldering iron and dremel tool that I can borrow, this will cost me about $65 plus my time. Hopefully I don't ruin one or more of the components trying to put it together though.
 
I use the splitfish products. The frag pro is very good. I personally would use the v2 since its wired and wired controllers or much better then wireless. From videos i have seen on youtube that compares the fragnstine to splitfish products shows that the splitfish products are better in game. just got to set them to the correct settings. it all depends on the game.

splitfish products allow you to fully customize to your liking. with the tweek settings that you do on your pc it allows you to change any button to do what you want. Since most games these days only allow you to select pre set button layouts.

On the chuck itself you can change your sensitivity. Like for myself I like to put my in game sensitivity to max. On the chuck I put it to 3 so I am able to still turn fast but be under control for long range shots.

They also have rapid fire and that as well can be adjusted to however fast you wish to have it.

I would recommend getting one of the splitfish products. They have never let me down.
 
I have used the FragFx V2/Pro for over a year now. With this controller I am able to use a mouse over analog. This means I will have better aiming/percision. One of my favorite features is that I am able to customise the button layout to how I like it. Also, the sensitivity dial that is on the left portion of the controller lets me adjust my sensitivity on the fly.

By far this controller allows me to be more percise and more leathel on the battlefield. If you want to step up your game pick up one of the SplitFish gameing controllers.
 
The use of a PC is almost absolutely necessary otherwise you probably wouldn't be able to configure your controls. I'm very interested in this. Maybe I could finally game on my PS3 instead of using it just for media.
 
I'd really like to test one of those XIMs. There are games that I think just need to be played with a controller, including FPS games, but I'd love using KB/M on some.
