Fragile 6800GT core?

Here's pictures of my 6800GT core.

Is it just me or does the core remind you all of the oldschool Athlon naked (i.e. fragile and unprotected) cores, only four times larger? The shim around the outside is lower than the core itself.

I need to know because I think I might have just cracked my core installing a waterblock and I'm too scared to take it off to see for myself.

The core isn't fragile at all. What makes you think you cracked it? Are you getting artifacts? My card artifacts with an MCW50 installed and is fine with stock cooling installed. Weird.

What's up with that memory module on the far left of the card (closest to DVI input) It looks like it was chipped?

The memory module isn't actually chipped. Just a trick of the light and of the remaining thermal compound on it.

What makes me think that the chip is fragile is that it looks exactly like the old Athlon/Duron chips. I had a bad experience with a Duron in which I (without thinking) picked up the motherboard by the installed HSF, and I heard an ever subtle crunch. Took HSF off and there was a corner chipped off. Now I think the integrated HS are a godsend, but the 6800GT doesn't have them.

The reason you have artifacts with the MCW50 is probably because the RAM isn't being cooled well enough. How's your RAM cooled?
