Fractions

My daughter's been working with fractions in school, and I really despise checking her homework. It's so damned tedious doing math with fractions.

Does anybody even use advanced fractions regularly? The closest I've come is working off of architectural prints, and I convert all of them to decimal feet.

Metric system??? When the hell is that going to happen? I've been promised that since the 70s, and so far all I've gotten is my soda sold in liters...

The sooner fractions fall to the dustbin of history, the better :^/

That's about all I get out of it. A pointless exercise to torment students. You can't even be precise when working/measuring in fractions. Referring to architectural prints, you'll see garbage like 12'1,11/16"+... +???, + what? It might not matter so much for that 1 measurement, but when you add up a bunch across a building, you can get some real error.

12'1,11/16"=12.1406'=3.7005m and your + makes it a nice 3.701m(rounded), which is more precise than is needed in this particular example.

I use fractions daily in my job which is construction engineering. Mainly have to do with dimenions, obviously. So freaking annoying to have to add a lot of different measurements with fractions of an inch with differing demoninators.

Example? mm accuracy is more than enough for consumer level measuring, and any precise work is already in some kind of decimal format(metric, or decimal feet/inches)

Anyhow, fractions are a rehearsal for algebra. Fraction fail ==> algebra fail. Algebra is necessary for more math later on, and is great for learning critical thinking and abstraction skills. Do the math (ha!).

Those are artificial constructs... Work doesn't have to be exactly 3/9.
The type of work dictates how many decimal places you use.
Anything scientific will be metric, and a car dealer doesn't need any kind of fraction/decimal of truck loads.
you need x amount of cars, and
they'll get delivered by the appropriate amount of trucks.

I use them everyday, and they're amazing. Writing out and multiplying a half dozen decimals isn't worth my time. Most of the time, I don't even get real numbers until all the algebra is done.

I see you haven't taken any higher level math courses.
These "artificial constructs" are essential to solving myriad problems, both abstract and real world.

And fractions will always be equal to or grater than decimal numbers in accuracy.

In engineering, we generally convert our fractions into their decimal representations. I tend to keep an answer in fraction form as long as possible, combine every equation needed to get the right solution, simplify, and then convert to a decimal answer. That is somewhat the over-achievers method as most college students will plug the decimal answer from one equation directly into the next. They are generally fairly close to the right answer.

In short, it is important when precision counts. However, unless they are going to be a math major, I wouldn't worry too much about it.
