FPSs with good AI.

Ok, I've gone through FEAR a few times now and I have to say, definately a very influential FPS. I loved the story and I really loved the tactical side at least as much. It was a pretty smart AI, with surprising turns: some of the soldiers refusing to advance under orders, rushings, flankings, smart grenade use, etc.

So, is there any other FPSs with equally good AI? Something with a developing story is a bonus.

FEAR definitely takes the cake for AI from what I've played. I don't really think anything compares that I remember.

No One Lives Forever had decent AI IIRC. I remember them taking cover and working in groups. I even remember the AI accidentally shooting one in front of him with a spear gun once. The guy was getting ready to shoot and then he screamed and died, I was like WTF!!! His buddy had shot him. hehe

Descent 3 is the one that really stands out from what I remember. I still don't think there is any singleplayer FPS AI that is clearly superior to what it had. Maybe UT2004, if you count that as a singleplayer game.

On prior FPSs I've played (Wolfenstien 3D, DOOM, Duke Nukem, Quake, etc), I've done the usual out in the open, running circles around the target, around the cover, etc, but in recent games (Return to Wolfenstein, Quake II and especially F.E.A.R.) I find myself using cover more, popping out, taking some shots and then heading for cover again. With FEAR's SloMo, I can set up for a major run, but sometimes I can't find a target so it's back under cover.

My style has changed as of late. I now tend to seek cover more.

A lot of folks criticize it but the AI in Far Cry could be pretty sneaky sometimes.
I recall several firefights where the baddies would sneak up on me, use suppression fire, work in groups and flank. They also made intelligent use of rockets, grenades, and snipers.

BUT, there would also be times when they charge you, lose track, and just wander away as if nothing had happened.

Weird.

No One Lives Forever, FEAR, and Alien Vs Predator all had decent AI's.
Interesting Point: They were all done by Monolith using various versions of the LithTech engine.

I'm surprised no one mentions HL2. I'm playing it through again and there are a couple times when the AI surprises me. Unfortunately there aren't many situations in the game that the AI can be used, because most of the indoor maps are really linear so they can't really get behind you or surprise you. And the monsters are stupid, of course...

From what I remember, Far Cry's "AI" consisted of the enemies just blindly running up to you using the shortest path available. You could take out almost anyone with no damage by finding a spot to ambush them and then grabbing their attention with a few pot shots. I can't recall them doing anything else at all. As good as FC was otherwise, the enemy AI was definitely one of its weak points.

Some of the monsters were much harder to kill, but that was more because of their speed and/or strength; they basically behaved the same way.

Far Cry AI was generally pretty good. They would use cover, try to outflank you, and run for help if required.

The AI in SWAT 4 seems good most of the time.

The AI mates were decent if you directed them correctly. But most of the time, the enemy AI would wipe them out.

The SSF mod works great. Your AI teammates can actually hold their own like the elite police officers they are supposed to be.

The FEAR AI was good, but what killed it for me was the fact that they blurted out their tactics. Their minds were supposed to be connected, yet they blurted out everything. No elite soldiers blurt out their tactics. "Flank him"....

Ghost Recon 1 AI was great. It still is good today, so imagine how good it was long ago.

Far Cry AI was good, but the damn radar killed it for me. And the music that played every time a badguy spotted you.

Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault AI was really good.

Well, I know in BT back in 82, we were supposed to shout out when we threw a grenade, unless it was clearly known between all involved friendlies when and where the grenade was going, usually two man teams working to take out bunkers.

Also, I don't think the soldiers minds are connected to each other. Only that the commander could command them psychically.

I never heard a "flank him" command, I only experienced the result. I did hear commands to move up, close in, take cover, grenade out (this gave perhaps five seconds to move, unless the grenade made physical contact), flush him out (another grenade attack), fire in the hole, etc.

What's BT?

Paxton controlled all the soldiers, so they really never needed to speak to each other. But this is a game, so it is what it is.

I also know about the, "frag out" or "fire in the hole". I also understand when they say, "he's trying to flank us".

But I wanted to see more hand signals for, "move up" or "advance"

But the worst voice command that takes the cake? "I need backup" or " he wiped out our whole squad".

The player doesn't know that he wiped out your whole squad, so why are you stating the obvious to your other 1 remaining teammate. (cause they only say it when there are 2 baddies left)

I remember when I first played HL 1. It was the first time I actually noticed a games AI. I ran behind a box to reload, and I hear "clink, clink, clink...." and all of a sudden there is a grenade at my feet.

AI has gotten much better than even that in later years, but I still remember that because FPS AI was very stupid before that game and it was such a surprise to have enemies actually employ tactics against you.

You can turn the HUD off in Far Cry, which removes the radar too. Makes the game a little more difficult. 😀

Is only the radar gone or is every thing else gone on the HUD?

Also, I thought this option was only available in the hardest setting. I hate playing games where I have die over and over just replaying the same section until I find a cheap way to beat it.

Everything, but there may be a way to hide just the radar.

I actually played through some of the game by hiding everything on the screen, even the crosshair, but I gave myself all the weapons and full ammo.

It was still fairly difficult at times because without the use of the radar, there always seemed to be at least one enemy that saw me before I could see him.

GRAW has ESP AI -- I hate that crap. So annoying for enemies to laser onto you after you drag your chest through the whole map. That game was my first bad experience with PC games...the next was Rainblow six Vegas. (yeah, I hadn't played that many games before -- BF2, HL2, FEAR)

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

That game, seriously, has both the worst and best A.I you could possible wish to see in a first-person-shooter, literally. It's just both extremes.
