Probably true (I don't know), but I remember Anandtech did some comparisons because the 5900 was still a very mainstream card when HL2 came out. If you look at the nifty mouse overs in that review, DX9 certainly didn't seem to be adding that much.

Pretty much. HL2 was really a DX8 game with DX9 water with some shaders here and there that you would hardly notice. Though they can do some damage on the frame rate.
