that one comment about how if a card can play something today at 40FPS@1600x1200 or so means it will not last as long because games this year will push cards more so than games of last year stood out to me

i think since the 9 series (albeit not next-gen at all) is around the corner i should wait to see their prices, might as well you know since they are like right here, but i dont think i have the patience to wait for the truly next gen cards

Frame rates fluctuate from 30fps to 75fps and so on. Your minimum frame rates matter more than your average frame rate. Longevity matters to me more than how many fps I get.

I'm really a budget gamer. I never buy anything over $200 if that.

FPS is a good indication of how long some cards last. Raw performance is king. Some cards are better at filters and so on which can blind consumers on how long a card would last.

Of course not, once the 9600GT starts to run games choppy, the 8800GT will distant itself from the 9600GT, it has more shaders, more pixel and texture power, even though that doesn't say all the reality, for sure the 9600GT can be bottlenecked easier than the 8800GT in certain operations.
