FPS Non-WASD Key Mapping

I find it uncomfortable to use the WASD keys, and find this to be much more comfortable.

Pinky Finger ? A ? Move Backwards
  • (Shift ? Walk Slowly, Z ? Crouch, Q ? Translocator Camera/Quick Weapon Switch)
Ring Finger ? S ? Strafe Left
  • (W ? Lean Left)
Middle Finger ? D ? Strafe Right
  • (E ? Lean Left)
Index Finger ? F ? Use/Gernade
  • (R ? Reload, V ? Issue Commands)

Right Mouse ? Move Foreward
Left Mouse ? Primary Fire
3rd Mouse (Right Thumb) ? Alternate Fire (UT 2004)
Mouse Wheel ? Switch Weapons

My only issue is that I can't crouch and move backwards at the same time, but that is rarely needed.

Anyone else use something different than WASD?

Right mouse - move forward
Left mouse - fire
Thumb mouse - move backward
a - strafe left
s - strafe right
space - jump

every other button around left home row (a,s,d,f) = bound to something useful

prepare for your head to explode.

I still haven't met anyone that uses this.

T - forward / G - backward
R - L-strafe / F - R-strafe

Mouse1 - fire, Mouse2- jump, Mouse4- alt fire

only need two fingers for movement while the rest can be used for weapon, voice menu, and action buttons

you people are so messed up. people use WASD for a reason...it's because it's convenient so you can access as many buttons as you need for most FPSes...

don't worry, AgaBoogaBoo used to use left mouse button to walk forward, S and F for left and right and D for back....his right click is fire...WTF

I just use the arrows on the right side of the keyboard, and use the del, home, page up, etc keys above them for grenades, flashlights, reloading, crap like that.

Your mom's a repost. Sorry. Sorry.

I use WASD, but I can see why people don't like it. I might try some of these suggestions when I have more time.

i could say wrong forum also...

I have a friend who used ASDF for movement... his claim was that he could move quicker because each finger had a dedicated movement, nothing shared.

I use ESDF since it was more natural to have my hands at the home keys. I feel like I get more useful key mappings out of it too

Strafe Left - Z
Strafe Right - X
Jump - A
Crouch - Space
Alternate Fire - Left Ctrl

Searching for WASD in OT gets one locked thread.

Prehaps you want this posted in P&N.

I map WASD to ASDF. Its where my fingers sit naturally. Plus, i have 4 fingers and a thumb (space bar) why only use 3? WASD never made sense to me. Like the penny it should be abolished.

When I first started playing FPSes, I used arrow keys, but soon switched to WASD and haven't looked back. I've thought of moving to ESDF (1 key over for each) because it would give more hotkeys for my pinky, but I'm too lazy to set the controls.

Descent mapping variation:

A key - ring finger - move forward

R key - Run/walk

F key - index finger - move backward

s/d keys - middle finger - strafe left/right

Mouse 1 = primary weapon

Mouse 2 = grenade or secondary fire

Same here. Of course I totally suck. Seriously.
