FPS - keyboard/mouse settings

When I made the keyboard to keyboard/mouse switch in the early Quake days I copied settings I read from another user.

I have been stuck with the same settings for all FPS games, and I think it screws me at times.

I use the right mouse button for move forward and then D for move backward, S and F are left/right and C for crouch. Left button is for fire.

I'm curious if other people have screwy setups that they are forced to stick with since we're so used to it.

I use the arrow keys as I find there are a lot more easy-to-find buttons around them than WASD.

I remap WASD to ESDF for the easy to find F-key nub. Reload is R, crouch is C, Space is jump... other buttons are remapped as needed by game :)

Me too. I keep the basic set as: RShift for running, R for Reload, Delete for Crouch, Page Down for Jump.

My setup is pretty much the exact same, except I use middle mouse for grenade.

This... Except if the game doesn't have leaning I use Q for previous weapon. :)

used to do arrow keys, converted to WASD and haven't gone back.

a friend uses their mouse button to move forward and i think it's insane.

I've become too complacent, and currently using practically all default keys. I got like this after encountering one game after another that was a hassle (or impossible) to map by my old standards.

I'm glad you guys are discussing this though, as I need to make a fresh start. I also really want to start using a backlit keyboard. Maybe for my birthday :)

I do right click for move forward and side mouse(thumb button) for alt fire...everything else the same as default.

I'm right with you, dude. I have been using the right mouse button for forward since iD's Wolfenstein 3d... It makes it way easy to circle strafe.

The only difficulty I have is going for the numbers keys to switch weapons (in BF2). Trying to go from the ASD keys to 1234or5, I often hit the wrong number.
I think a good gamer keyboard would have a nub on the ASorD key.

Do other WASD users put their index finger on the W? I use WASD, but with my fingers in the original home row, as if typing. So the W uses the ring finger. Leaves the index finger free for other hotkeys.

I generally remap inventory to B so I can manage it with my left hand.

This. The Delete,End,and PgDown button are right there, as well as the right Shift and Right Ctrl (pinky finger). That's 9 actions within a fingers reach, plus all the buttons on the mouse make for around 15 or 16 actions available with minimal movement/effort.

I'm sure though that every setup has its advantages/disadvantage. It's just what works for me.

I generally stick with the defaults -

the game of the moment (FEAR): WASD for movement, Q/E lean left/right; R reload; shift zoom; f use; z health; c crouch; x flashlight; left ctrl fast reflexes; space = jump

Same way the last 4 times this question was asked.

I normally leave the defaults but sometimes push more things (or more important things) to my 5 button mouse. If there are grenades I move them up to middle or side button. If some fool defaulted the zoom to the keyboard I move it up to button number 2, especially if there is no secondary fire.
I like to make good use of the TAB since its fat and easy to find. If they put a crappy command there I usually replace it.

On a completely unrelated note, I wish more shooters would use a weapon inventory similar to Red Faction. Select a group with a number and keep hitting it to cycle just through that group. Or roll the wheel to go through everything. Half-Life 2 was good but I dont think you ever had more than two items in a group.
The best would be like Deus Ex where you can customize where you want things to go by dragging them and seeing their icons all the time in a taskbar.
Shame that RPG's go out of their way to make stuff easier. (With the exception of Oblivion, which was actually kind of a pain.)

I can't believe how many people use WASD instead of ESDF.

Pros of ESDF:
-You have a LOT more access to additional keys for games that require a lot of hotkey mappings/binds
-It feels natural with your index finger on F

Cons:
-You have to remap from the newb WASD in every game :[

I use the standard Half-Life controls:
WASD for movement
shift = run/walk
ctrl = crouch

I don't know why anyone would use "c" for crouching. When I put my finger on "c", I can no longer strafe right.

I also don't understand why anyone would use the arrow keys for movement. Doing that puts my hands about a foot apart, which is quite a bit narrower than my shoulders. This would put my left wrist at a 45 degree angle at all times, and that is a quick way to get wrist strain. Using WASD keeps my hands about shoulder width apart so my wrists are straight at all times.

Turn your knuckles up slightly and you can use your thumb to crouch. Since crouch isn't used all that often and is usually a toggle switch, it only needs to be hit occasionally. This frees up the shift/ctrl keys for other, more important stuff.

i use WASD to move, shift to crouch, ctrl to sprint. z is usually prone, f is usually interact/pick up. i agree i never understood c for crouch because i would use the same finger used for 'd' but i do see that a thumb is supposed to be used there. interesting.

I pretty much go with the default WASD, but now I'm so used to playing Source games that I hate not having Q as a quick switch between weapons, so if there is an option for that I always bind it to Q. If there is no option for it I just end up hitting Q and saying "damn it" a lot.

I never understood how WASD became the default - it's just not natural :).

I use the normal left had position ESDF and I can use the pinky for QAZ. Usually I use A for crouch, use W for lean left, R for lean right, space bar for jump.
