What 24" monitor would you purchase, if the computer was strictly for gaming? I do not need wide viewing angles....No Photoshop work. Native resolution I would like is 1920x1200.

Please don't move this thread to 'Graphics'....thx....I want the hardcore gamers here to help me...

Thx, folks.

I think resolution is a key factor here, because you want to play at the LCD's native resolution if possible. Going to take more hardware to push a higher resolution, of course.

I've had my Dell 24 inch for a few years, it's getting old but gets the job done. Native is 1920x1200 and I like it.

For first person shooters, if I was buying now and was considering 24" monitors I would actually reconsider and go for the 22" Samsung Syncmaster 2233RZ for its 120Hz refresh rate ability, don't limit yourself to 60fps.

I second this opinion.

My office was able to get me a corporate discount through Dell. You should talk to your IT guy if you work for a decent sized company.

Dell 2405FPW

They don't make it any more though, and I'm not sure if the new ones are as good as the original. They're probably comparable. I know mine uses a Samsung panel, so you're basically getting a Samsung monitor at a discount.

As for ghosting, it's pretty good. When I bought mine it was one of the best monitors you could get. Today, my Sharp HDTV obliterates it in terms of black level and response time.

If you're a hardcore gamer I would actually recommend something from Sharp. They have smaller HDTVs slightly larger than 30" that would probably work very well for you.

In fact most of us that frequent the Video forum are hardcore gamers, infact, that explains why we like video cards so much. It's not because we like expensive, hot, noisy things that make us spend a lot more money on PSU's

I have this monitor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16824254026

And I can say that it is quite great. I wasn't able to detect any ghosting and I have perfect vision. I'm a hardcore PC gamer and digital artist/3D modeler, and this monitor has stood up to my needs very well. It's also 4x Customer choice winner award winner at Newegg. Can't go wrong with it.

In fact, much more hardcore than any other forum. They will probably beat anybody in hardcore-ness. Also, non-widescreen monitors are becoming rare. Mine is samsung 20" 204b I play on it day and night, no complaints from me.

Idk, I have a 22" Acer with a decent resolution and a 5ms response time. It is big, clear and perfect for my needs.

It is the last thing i will need to upgrade for a long, long time..

Notice in my 'sig', I have a 20" Dell # 2001FP. Don't know if I'd notice much of a difference going to a 22"...

That Samsung does 1680x1050. I was hoping to go 1920x1200.

All I would look at in the monitor specs is response time of about 6ms and DVI out. I probably wouldnt notice a difference with anything else.

That's an impressive looking monitor, I saw one earlier this week as it jumped out at me but the computer store had it way over priced for 500 with a custom built system or 700 without WTF! Does Best Buy carry that model online maybe? I might have to spring for it after the next gen cards come out.

Well the whole reason to go with the Samsung 2233RZ isn't the size, its the refresh rate. While it certainly is nice to have a higher resolution, it all comes down to whether or not you want the marginal increase of high res eye candy or the measurable advantage of 120Hz

xbitlabs review
Moreover, the 120Hz refresh rate provides substantial benefits of its own. I had not expected a reduction in response time (it is smaller than the refresh rate even at 120Hz) but the considerable reduction of the intensity of RTC artifacts was a nice surprise. This is a rare thing indeed: a 3ms matrix with no RTC artifacts!

Then, the 120Hz refresh rate ensures smoother motion in games and at ordinary work. Perhaps it is not a critical improvement for office applications, yet an advantage anyway, and I guess that gamers will welcome 120Hz monitors warmly.
full review here

If you had said you were into RTS and RPG games instead of FPS, I would then say go for the larger/higher res monitor as it is the inherent nature of those game types to be less demanding of a higher frame rate. Hell, there are plenty of FPS gamers out there who deliberately run ridiculously low resolutions and completely forgo any eye candy just to make sure they max out their frame rate. Of course if they're running on just about any LCD they're not going to see any more than 60 frames per second. These new 120Hz LCDs change things though, and that Samsung is the best one currently available.

What monitor do you have?

Samsung SyncMaster 216BW, I chose that model a few years back due to the panel A, C, versus S thing on the 22 inche models so I took that issue out of the equation now I'll be looking for a monitor that does 1900 X 1200 here soon especially when next gen cards arrive shortly.
