FPS cap and GPU temp.

Does lowering a game's FPS cap decrease the temperatures of the video card?

Some people tell me the card just throws out the extra frames - meaning it still does the same amount of work, thus temperatures don't change.

But then there was the problem with Starcraft 2, where the main menu would cause heavy stress (and even overheat) some cards due to the lack of an FPS cap.

Seems like an obvious question, but google searches give me mixed results... does anyone know for certain?

well using the SC2 fiasco as an example i would be inclined to agree that it does lower temps. A good freind of mine had issues with SC 2 with his 470's overheating in the menu, the hacks to limit FPS fixed it till the official patch fixed it for good.

Capping FPS to some limit reduces GPU load only if the GPU's don't have to work hard to produce said limit. If your GPU's are pushing 150FPS and you throw on vsync so they only put out 60FPS, then yes, you'll notice a significant reduction in GPU load (power consumption and temperatures included). However, if your GPU's are only putting out 63FPS and you flip on vsync, well then you're not going to notice much of a difference 🙂.
