Fox splitting Summerall, Madden after Super Bowl

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Pat Summerall and John Madden won't be in the booth together next season, The Associated Press learned Tuesday.

Summerall's announcement that he's leaving his longtime NFL broadcast partner after the Super Bowl was to come in a conference call with reporters Tuesday afternoon, two industry sources said on condition of anonymity.

The sources said they did not know whether Summerall will remain at Fox with a new announcing partner.

Summerall's play-by-play and Madden's color analysis have combined to form one of pro football's signature announcing teams. This season is their 21st together in the booth. Both moved from CBS to Fox Sports in 1994.

They will call Fox's telecast of the Super Bowl on Feb. 3. It will be Summerall's 17th Super Bowl broadcast.

He has been associated with the NFL for half a century as a player and announcer.

His TV career began in 1961 at CBS, where he later was teamed with Madden.

Those guys look like they're going to keel over and die at any time. They look TERRIBLE on screen.

Then again, they are the best broadcasters.

good. IMO John "Captain Obvious" Madden needs to be cut from TV broadcast. He states the obvious all the time, and not just once, he states the same thing over and over again. And he is a bandwagon jumper. when the Cowboys were good, he would not stop talking about how great the Cowboys were, and would defend anything that they did that was sub-par, meanwhile not paying attention to the team that was playing the 'boys. Now he is predominately a Packers fan. everything he says is repetative over the course of a season and much of it makes no sense. just my 2 cents. Pat was ok though...hope he finds a place to call games.

I would rather listen to Madden/Summerall than the numerous clones who've popped up. Is there a worse group than Theisman and the other two guys (can't remember their names) on ESPN? I mute the sound when those guys are on.

The only thing worse is any NBA announcing team in which Bill Walton is a participant!

I don't like any of the NFL broadcasters on any network. When I watch a Steeler game I mute the TV and listen to Myron Cope. a TRUE broadcasting legend. :)

LOL You gotta be kidding. Before the 90s Madden was all over the Cowboys blatenetly showing how much he hated them. And the Cowboys of the early 90s were the best and he knew it. Why? Because they only had a handful of plays they chose from and it was always blatently obvious where they were going yet no one could stop them.

I hope they drop Madden as well. He is the most annoying announcer in Football.

I hate that guy with a passion. I don't get the math:

Retarded idiot + annoying voice + stupid opinions + hated by everyone = NBA Commentator

thanks. you proved my point that he is a bandwagon jumper. by saying he hated the boys before the 90s and non-stop praising them in the 90s. Thanks! (btw: i never said the cowboys were not good. he just will never learn to be neutral when calling a football game.)

Madden is an absolute idiot. I agree he should have been cut long, long ago. My roomate and I base our decision on which game to watch on sunday (or during the playoffs here) on whether he's calling the game or not, he annoys the living piss out of us. bah, bloated overhyped windbag who just likes to rattle on and on about stuff a 5 year old could see from watching football a little while. "This player is tall. He can jump high. So one on one no one can cover him if the ball is thrown correctly! I am a genious for figuring that out, get on your knees and praise my superior intelligence."

bah. ;)

In Walton's case it adds up!:D

The problem with these TV guys is that they are trying to become celebrities themselves. They should be heard (sparingly) and not seen.
How does a guy (or girl) get a job describing a simple sport to people who can see? And be lousy at it?
