Jalopnik had a piece last week that it will most likely be a turbo of some sort.

Like you, also hoping it drives NC prices down. Would like to pick up one as a second car since my current Miata isn't really drivable on the street anymore.

There's quite a lively discussion going on at Miata.net forums about turbo or not. I'd say people are split evenly. It's quite funny actually how they are dissecting the sound of the video.

I think its a turbo. I'm hoping its at least a 2.0L Turbo but more likely the rumors suggest 1.6L turbo.

If it has mini cooper powerlevels 220-230hp, I think you got a winner. People calling for 250-300 are crazy its not what the miata is all about.

HOWEVER, I hope they make a mazdaspeed version

I already have plans to get one in the fall. I guess I'll have to change my username. :D

Not turbo. Just because you hear air wooshing, doesn't automatically make it some forced induction. Everyone claiming there's a bypass whoosh...I'm not convinced...not a peep in that last gear change...I think it was a carefully crafted audio clip for this very reason...HYPE!

This is my thought as well. I'm not 100%, but if I had to say one way or the other; I think its just for the hype

There's no whine to go with the whoosh, so I'm tending towards weirdly placed microphone and some kind of wind noise as well as induction noise.
The rpm characteristics are also quite linear.
Might still be a turbo, but that video isn't strong evidence in favor.

This.

I placed a microphone in the engine compartment, near the intake and here's what my 12 year old BMW sounded like.

Sounds non-turbo. Sounds NA for sure -- has that howl like a Honda with Vtec etc. No "whoosh" or muffled sound like a Turbo engine typically makes.

I am betting it gets the Skyactiv 2.0L (or smaller 1.8L?) similar to the one used in the Mazda3. The NC isn't underpowered with 158-167HP/140lb-ft and a @2200lbs curb weight. So I don't think much will change other than improved MPG.

There are rumors of a 1.3L (or 1.5L) turbo putting out 200hp, but nothing concrete.

I guess we will find out in a week.

The 2.0 Mazda3 engine gets 157~165hp, which would give it a better power to weight ratio than the NC, and almost the same HP and a bit less weight than the NB, but was more torque.

I don't see why they'd need to go much above the mid 100hp mark for the standard higher power model, so a 2.0 NA would be more than enough, or smaller and turbo but similar HP.

Good point.

Shame about the reveal. It was by far the worst car reveal in history. The Youtube chat comments made up for it though. Pure comedic gold.

I like the new look, but I am not as excited about getting an ND right away.
