I use EAC(Exact Audio Copy-Free) coupled with the LAME encoder. EAC isn't about how fast it is but accuracy. Minor hiccup sin the computer, or slight problems on the cd are detected and corrected if at all possible by doing multiple reads... Takes Quite a bit longer... A typical CD can take 20 minutes or more to rip. I've had incredible consistancy using this setup.

If you're using LAME, you should be using the -alt preset standard setting as it will produce files nearly identical in quality to those at 320kbps. I find that the setting produces files which I cannot tell apart from the originals. I'm using $150 headphones, so I figure I should be able to hear *some* difference. The LAME compression really impresses me. 🙂

got the 40 gig RCA lyra iPod clone from Circuit city yesterday for $200 with belt clip, carrying case, car and home a/c adapter, car cassette adapter, headphone to RCA adapter, and stereo headphones with a 1 year parts and labour warrenty. less than an inch wider and only slightly thicker than an ipod and its batter last 3 hours longer than ipod. looks like ill stick with the rca lyra now that i bought it, sounds great too

Clearance at my CC, they had about 10 of them, all for that price, check the hot deals forum for my thread. Yes, it is the RD2840, got the box sitting right here.
i would wait, or buy an alternative product. i currently own a 3D 15GB iPod, and here are some things i hate about it:
cons.
1. the touch sensitive buttons truly suck. they basically make the remote mandatory. unfortunately, my remote has already gone on me - one channel cuts out. most likely due to a crack in the wire. a new remote isn't cheap. the new 4G pods will have the ipod mini buttons, so u can keep the pod in your pocket without it being on hold and actually skip track, play, stop, pause, etc. without having to pull the thing completely out of your bag/pocket/whatever, take hold off, and then select play options.
2. the battery life is dismal. i think the life of my battery after less than a year of use is down to about 6hrs. it's insufficient to daily outings without bringing along the charger to recharge it.
3. there's something else about it that i hate, but i can't recall at the moment.
it's super cool, but if i had to purchase an mp3 player all over again, i wouldn't buy the ipod. i'd opt for something nearly equivalent in size (hdd capacity and physical size) but with longer battery life and non-touch sensitive controls (no other players sport touch sensitive controls anyway). the touch sensitive scroll wheel is cool though, just not the buttons.

All these complaints about battery life. If you care about battery life use a flash based player. No hd based player will have both good battery life and be light weight. Personally I use a flash player that fits in my jeans coin pocket and lasts a week between recharges. A couple 512MB cards holds more music than I can remember the names of.
I haven't been following the PSP closely, has Sony changed it mind about consumer writable UMDs? I thought it was generally indicated that the format was locked down and the only way to get your own media onto the PSP was the memory stick slot (which is a price gouged proprietary Sony format in itself, but at least you can write to them ^^).
I'm not sure about that issue, although one would think they would let you do it. How are you supposed to watch movies on the thing if you can't encode your own?
If they don't let you write to the UMD discs then I won't buy one, that's it. It will kill 90% of the functionality that I'm looking for.

Their latest HD MP3 player actually plays MP3s as opposed to their ATRAC-3 system...so that's a step in the right direction. Hopefully the PSP will follow this trend.
Their hardware design is IMO the best in the industry as far as portable audio is concerned. Their only issue has been the DRM, and that is because they own Sony Music and all that. If they can finally get over themselves and scrap it, they will be able to take on Apple very easily.

I wouldn't sweat it. Any price cuts on the iPod are bound to be small, face it Apple isn't exactly known for being cheap. As for the 4G iPod having video, does anyone honestly care about this? What kind of videos will you want to watch on such a device? And I don't even want to think about what the price of the thing would be. It's like cell phones with cameras - I just don't get it. They seem to be very popular though. . .
that's a brilliant suggestion. if i want a player that can house my entire music collection - around 15gb, i should buy a measly 512mb flash player because the battery life is better. so if i want to use my player for upwards of ten hours or more, it would be great listening to the same set of songs 100 times over. yes, i like your idea.
in fact, there are hdd based players with excellent battery life. it just so happens the ipod isn't one of them.

Pretty much the only TV/movies I watch any more is off my PDA while on the go or waiting in line or for a class to start or something. I'm just too busy to watch at home. I have lots of subway and train trips in my daily life, though, and occasional long bus ones, so maybe it's more applicable to me. Capturing and ripping can be largely automated nowadays so getting the stuff to put on there is easy.
Also anime digisubs work well too if you're into anime, hehehe. At first I thought the subs would be too small, but it's fine (at least at 320x240 on a 3.7" display) since the viewing distance is so much closer being right in your hand.
