Frickin sweet. I understand the vastness of our universe, but it's always fun to see it mapped out.

It's sad that there are a great number of people who still believe that all of that was made just for us.

When did the Universe one come out? I swear I've seen it.

I also have their Our Universe book as well.

I think this one wasn't part of National geographic magazine. I remember seeing this shot in a large atlas of the skies.

You can have my liver.

The map of the Milky Way is inaccurate. For starters we are in it, so it is impossible to see it from a distance to know what it looks like. Scientists like the big spirals because they are pretty, so someone said we inhabit one of the big beautiful spirals too and it caught on, similiar to when scientists assumed the sun was the center of the universe, but odds are, we do not. I have heard the evidence suggests we live in a Bard's Spiral, which is a type of spiral galaxy with fewer arms.

Those are great posters. I have the first one you linked to, hanging on one of my walls.

yep, the first one my parents saved from some magazine (Probably Time). It's in one of the bathroom drawers actually. Love pulling it out to read over it while on the throne. It's breathtaking.

This is older, isn't it? The map seems a bit dated, pre-Hubble.

The one picture of the Lagoon Nebula looks like something from Hubble.
The Universe one is dated 2000, The Milky Way is 2002. Hubble was launched in 1990.

Edit: the full-res versions finally downloaded. The Lagoon Nebula picture was from the ESA, but there are a few pictures on that poster from Hubble.

I always imagined when aliens came to visit earth, they would laugh at us for calling our galaxy "The Milky Way"

The universe has no center.

The center isn't where the big bang occurred?

The term big bang is kind of a misnomer that leads to some confusion. It's not like a bomb. The big bang wasn't an explosion in space, but OF space. So there is no center. Or it is equally true to say that every point in the universe is the center.
