For those that use Creative Soundblaster products:

There is an exe that is run on startup - NewsUpd - it will kill your keyrate. Wasn't MacroSloth's problem at all, it's Creative's.

it is an ad-server that serves no benefit except downloading and pushing new ads in your face every time you use Creative Player or Launcher, without notifying you that this is what it does.

The registry key to DELETE is located in:
My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Took me awhile to figure that one out... Enjoy :)

Great, another program that kills your keyrate AND your Internet bandwidth.

Thanx for the heads up Dan.

It was whacking my machine (Athlon 700) which benchmarks at 2.5 MKeys/Sec down to 1.2
basically stealing 50% of my cracking power. Without it, I get 2.45 MKeys/Sec.

Yep, it's one of the many things I KILL in every system I build with a CL soundcard. It's also real nice if you like to burn coasters. I didn't know, though, that the insidious little POS also loaded itself in Win2K.

Real player also installs a program that I do not know what it does, but it dropped my keyrate from 1.11M/keys to 1.08M/keys

Its called RNBOstart in MSConfig, and has a command line of c:\windows\system\rnbosent\sentstrt.exe

I have no idea what it does, or why its there. Real Player is not effected when this is disabled. The only indication I had that it was there, was a strange drop in my keyrate, even though there was nothing new in the Ctrl+Alt+Del window. What makes me mad, is that I was not prompeted by Real Networks that they were installing this thing..

If anyone knows what it is, could you let us know?

I have the full Creative Labs Liveware 3.0 install on my Win2K, but see none of the CPU wastage you are seeing, Dan. I have a few processes that take up a few seconds per hour, but nothing like what you describe.

Anyone running MS Office? The program that I DETEST is FINDFAST. It's the most worthless prog I've ever seen, but will install by default AND even if you tell it not to install. No kidding! It sucks CPU cycles AND causes hard drive activity.

I've done quite a few installs on Office2000 and there is a specific entry for findfast during install. I always set it to "NOT AVAILABLE", lo-and-behold, what's running after the reboot in taskmgr...fkg FINDFAST!!! arrrrggggg You have go in after the install and remove ALL traces of MS Office starting on the PC!

RE: Creative Adware....what BS. Nothing tees me more than these vendors secretly installing crap on your PC!!!

- or how about this one: You custom install win98 and tell it not to install "Online Services". Guess what, it does anyway!!!

-or this: clean install of 98SE, when you try to open IE, you get a screen to register with MSN!!! no internet connect wiz, no IE launch!!! :|

Sorry for the ramblings, but DanC hit my "PO'd Bone" with this post. :D

I believe that Download Accelerator has an AdBot as well, although I don't know if it sucks cycles, since I'm pretty darn new to the whole d.net thing. I'm pretty sure that typing AdBot in "Find" will catch it for you...

Yea, I killed that Creative ad thing once I figured out what it was. Also Winamp installs a program that loads at startup, haven't checked to see what kind of resources it uses though.

While we are on the subject, anyone know what appl. InstantAccess belongs to? It runs as a task at startup, (probably from something my kids installed) similar to the Creative, RealPlayer, etc. ones.
