Found the most amazing cure for an ear infection..

So for the last couple days I diagnosed myself with an ear infection--symptoms included an awful fever, fatigue, sore throat, and major pains in my ear that made me suicidal.

I ended up just resting a lot, taking a Vitamin C pill everyday, and took aspirin which was supposed to reduce the fever. After 3 days or so it was a little bit improved but still really annoying, and I really hoped to get better for the Halloween weekend.

I ask a med school friend then who recommended to go to the doctor and get some anti-biotics--which was probably going to be a last resort effort..since I hate to get anti-biotics unless I'm in a life threatening situation.

I google around then and find this article:

Which recommended garlic oil, which I didn't have..but said that cooking oil may work as well.

I decide I have nothing to lose then, so I grab some corn oil from our cabinet, pour a few drops into a shot class, go in front of the mirror, tilt my head to the side, and ever so slowly pour it in my left ear.

For a few seconds I go completely deaf in my ear, thinking wtf did I just do why do I believe everything I read on the internet--but within minutes, I find myself COMPLETELY CURED.

Maybe it's just because I lost an ear drum on my left side so now I can't feel any pain over there anymore, or cooking oil was really the magic cure all I should've tried days ago--but whatever it is, I'm a new person again.

Cliff's:

Had awful pain in ear
Tried normal remedies, which didn't work
Poured corn oil in ear, voila!

My mother-in-law uses garlic oil as a remedy for ear infections as well. Worked for my wife, but it's never done anything for me.
But, having had a ruptured ear drum recently, I think you'd know if it was ruptured. That was incredibly painful.

if you rupture your ear drum, wouldn't you go permanently deaf? How do they remedy that?

Typically it heals by itself, if it's really bad they use a paper patch to help healing.

What's the science behind oil curing an ear infection?

I have heard of this "cure" for swimmer's ear and I believe it had to do with getting the nasty water that was trapped in your ear out. This might work by flushing the goo out of your ear kicking out the bacteria.

it simulates ear cheese, but fresher. the ear canal needs ear cheese and wax to assist with bacteria removal.

Rubbing alcohol is a good cure for swimmer's ear. That's the main ingredient in OTC swimmer's ear drops.
Vegetable oil is a folk remedy for pets with ear mites.

Put a little pee in your ear.

This is also suppose to be good for pimples, I tried it when I was younger and it worked great. The bad part was I kept shooting piss up my nose and in my eyes and hair, it was really messy, also left a bad taste in my mouth. 😛

Yes, Eli is correct. Olive oil is in fact the best cure for ear infections. Even better than modern antibiotics. I learned that in my therapeutics course in pharmacy school. 🙂

EVOO.... YUMMO

Wont help significantly with the infection course but will relieve symptoms. You can also try Auralgan, studies show its better than oil. But if you're getting good relief with cheapo oil then no point going out to buy this stuff.

I wish I would have known these things back in elementary school - I had what was more or less a constant ear infection. It might've gone away for a few weeks or even a few months if I was lucky, but then it was right back. I remember it hurting so bad I cried 🙁

When I got a hole in my left ear drum from having a high speed jet of water from a crimped hose going straight in my ear while horsing around with a friend, I wasn't completely deaf as I heard a really loud roaring sound and experienced some pretty intense pain if I didn't keep my ear covered with either my hand or a pillow. All I got from the ENT doctor was some type of ear drops(not sure if it was medicine or what type if it was-I was 11 at the time) and it did indeed heal on its own.

Sweet Oil was what my mother used on me, although it never really helped that I could remember because I had very frequent/painful ear infections all the way until my mid-teens when they finally abated. Had tubes in my ears too for about 5 years or so(from age 5-10 when they removed them and I got to keep them, they looked like very tiny shiny metal sewing machine bobbins).

I wonder what happens if someone has a perforated ear drum, doesn't know it, and puts non-sterile olive oil in their ear. What would happen when the oil hits the middle ear?

Frequent middle ear infections are caused by a buildup of fluids caused by blocked Eustachian tubes. The fix is either tubes inserted into the ear drums, or removal of what is blocking the Eustachian tubes (usually the adenoids), or curing the infection that has caused the tubes to remain swollen and unable to let the ear drain naturally.

I had ear tubes twice as a kid as well as adenoids removed.. not fun.
