Found porn at a work server

I guess it is normal for you other server admins to come across a user who would "accidentally" save porn on their work server (where all the important documents are located for backing up daily).

I got an alert for a server running out of space. (the data drive for this location is only a paltry sum of 135 GB, but enough for documents)

Well, one guy who's probably bored at work since late 2006, saves a few pics here and there everyday at work. collected a massive 5500 pictures.

I didn't have time to see all the pictures (I didn't even get to the filenames starting with "a") before my boss tells me to delete the entire folder.

So what is the most ridiculous files you SA's ever found?

I'm hoping he calls the helpdesk and ask for a file restore for 'missing' documents.

edit: some spelling

That struck me as odd as well.

If you are saying that 135 gb of space is paltry for the server, then my guess is you work for a medium-large sized shop. Even if not, it sounds like you know who saved this. Maybe you just are being left out of the loop about the repercussions, but they wouldn't just delete it if there were going to be repercussions.

Maybe Slimline and I are missing something?

What, you didn't back that shit up for yourself first? BAN!

Seriously though...whoever did this must be an idiot to think that that many gigs of porn at work won't get him found out and subsequently fired. Hopefully it wasn't the 'you'd better call the cops on this guy' kind of porn.

Hopefully it was.

If it was OP, you need to get to that branch office for a ummm "system issue". When you get there keep your phone ready to record, for when the FBI come in, confiscate the system, arrest him, and escort him out. Then post it on Youtube.

"You just delete it? There are no repercussions?"

probably not canned, I'm a server admin, maybe that's a job for the web/network admin?

it was 80% soft porn, 10% hard, mostly barely legal type.

there are no standard rules for reporting porn found on data drive for 'branch locations', since some of the people are high dollar producers for the company, stock brokers/FAs.

the one guy we caught in the past, at the home office was a contractor, so my boss reported to his manager, he got canned the next day.

also, the guy at the security desk was surfing porn at work, he got fired too. so I guess it depends on who's doing it.

That struck me as odd as well.

135 gb is paltry. the new standard for a branch server (for ~10-20 people) is now a little more. Minneapolis is one of the older location and hence an older compaq server.

I know who saved this, it was in his personal document folder on the server. Yeah, usually brokers won't get any repercussions when it comes to this kind of stuff. Maybe if the network/web team catches them surfing it, but this has been happening since 8-2006....

Technically I "moved" it to another partition at that site with more free space so I can ... go thru it in-depth for the next days or two. er yeah....

but hey pulling 5500 pictures from that server back down here to the home office would not be wise.

we have network monitoring for people doing the monitoring. (I got slap on the wrist for having Sims 2) on my work laptop.

I've never found it on a server, but I'm in desktop support and I was working on someone's laptop one time and there was a porno DVD in the drive.

So let me get this straight. You get a slap on the wrists for having Sims 2, but somebody else is looking at porn on work systems (using company resources) and they won't even get that?

I agree 135 gb is paltry anymore, but for a company a 135 gb shared folder being "paltry" means that you work with a company that has many tb's of data backed up daily. It seems like you work for a medium sized shop at minimum. Anywho moving on.

Complete idiots. Some guy at an office branch at one of my former employers got caught (I swear I am not making this up!) printing child porn on the color printer. Needless to say he was fired (and probably also reported to law enforcement).

Once upon a time when I worked on the Help Desk I took a call about a guy having problems with some application (I forget which one). I had him on the phone and told him I would RDP into his PC and take a look (he was in another state). He said fine, ok. So I connect and he has four or five browser windows open all with porn... some with animals. So I tell the guy that when he is connected to our network via VPN from home all his internet traffic is coming through the corporate network (the VPN client disallows split tunneling). The phone went silent for like a minute and finally he's came back with "Oooookkk, that's good to know. I think I can fix this issue myself. Thanks, bye!" At that point my RDP session disconnected (he must have yanked his ethernet cord).

Another time (also while working HD) I took a case about a dieing hard drive. The guy was in my same building so I just grabbed a loaner notebook, went a few floors down to his cube and swapped out his notebook. When I got back to my desk and took a look at the drive he had something like 85GB of illegal MP3s. I pulled his work data off, docs, PSTs, etc (you know, the kind of stuff that SHOULD be on the network...). Slapped a new drive in and reloaded the OS. I copied all his work data to his secure folder on the network and took his notebook back to him. Later that day he called my desk phone and said he couldn't find all his data on the network. I asked what was missing and he said "My music folders... they're not here". My reply was "And?". He hung up on me. :)

yes. pretty much. and it also depends on who's caught... and who's the person doing the catching.

I work for wachovia securities. we do have tb's of data backed up daily, but that's not my dept. so i have no exact numbers. and, since this is an older location, they do not use TSM (backing up over the net), and all their stuff is on Super DLT.

This is why I only use remote desktop from my work PC. I can browse all the porn I want, and no one is the wiser...although I really don't enjoy porn anymore. :(

ATOT is my porno nowadays.
