If you have an older HP scanner you checked HP's website and probably found a message telling you to go and buy a new one, as HP would not release drivers for Vista. I finally found something that worked for me, just searching google.
I don't know these websites or the origin of the files, so be careful. There's an .exe inside, don't know what it is, don't run it.
I found this thread:

You must go through some 10 pages of ads to get to the file. I saved it, fixing its extension to .zip, scanned for viruses, and checked the .inf. Looked ok, very old dates in these files, weird.
So I removed all the failed crap (drivers, HP VueScan, etc). Plugged the scanner, and Vista immediatelly tried to find a driver and failed. It created the entry in the device manager, where I used "Update driver software" and specified the folder with the .inf file. No errors.
I tested the scanner using Windows Photo Gallery and Windows Paint, it worked well. Picasa previewed, but got stuck when asked to scan. I don't have any better sofware installed right now, I'm positive it will work.
Here's a section of the .inf. Maybe these files will work for these models, too. I think some models pre-date the PC era, I had a SCSI 4p on an HP 9000/735. Maybe some museum wants to have it in working order 🙂
Here's the list in case someone's searching.
