Sorry the photo is so grainy - room was horribly lit up you could barely see him +2 second exposure even.

Considering he came out of the couch I was sleeping on, and he's the size of a quarter more or less.

I love spiders though, but he looks a little like a brown recluse, although I am in Toronto and I don't think they live here.

That's not very big.

Brown reculse spiders do live in Toronto. I'm not sure if that is one. Look for the "violin" markings on the body.

I thought they were only in the southern states?

They are predominantly in the south, but also found up north.

I need a picture of the top (lookin down on the spider), but he could very well be a wolf spider. The size and general appearance fit.

That looks like a Wolf Spider, and from what I hear Brown Recluses don't get much bigger than a dime or nickle. So I think you're safe. 🙂

I think it's a wolf spider, but yeah, to be sure you need to see more.

The thing about wolf spiders is that there are many different types, but the markings on the back are common for the ones I've seen.

I saw something that looked a lot like that... what sorts of spiders like that am i likely to find in the DC metro area?

i think it's helpful when you say something is of unusual size and show a pic of it, there should be something in the frame to show relative size.

We were staying one night at a B+B in Hilo a few years back. We got back from dinner, and I spotted one of These bad boys in the foyer between our rooms. I managed to turn my wife away, and also my aunt and uncle. "hey look, it's Halley's comet"😛
Everybody went to bed, and I snuck out and herded that monster right back outside. I told no one about it, I figured they would not sleep😀

"While nobody wants to be startled by the sudden appearance of one of these hairy beasts, they are beneficial in the home and it is not recommended to kill the spider (either let it out or let it live in the home)."

Spiders are the only house-bug here in seattle that disturb me. They bight me, crawl on me, and weave webs across my porch overnight for me to walk through in the morning,
