i went to the local recycling place to get rid of an old Ikea shelf and thought i saw an LCD lying there in the hardware pile among the old vcr's ... took a closer look, and sure enough it was an IBM. it looked clean, so i thought what the hell - it's worth spending a few minutes on it.

took it home, plugged it in, and guess what? it works !
so i unplugged my ancient CRT, drove back to the dump and got rid of it

i'm not complaining, but I cannot understand... why in the world would someone get rid of a perfectly nice 17" LCD??? do ppl just have too much money ???

Perhaps there are deeper problems to that LCD... or so they thought :)

Nice find garbage picker!

Maybe they thought it was dead and threw it away. I found a HP Pavillion (1.8ghz Athlon) with a 17" CRT monitor, speakers, keyboard, mouse, printer in the trash. The only thing wrong with it was that there was a floppy disk in the drive.

It probably has other problems... like it turns off after prolonged use or something.

Someone who has a bad vid card, but thought they had a bad monitor is going to be dissapointed when they plug their new monitor in. Too bad they threw the old one away early.

Actually, maybe throwing it in the dump applied the proper amount of "percussive maintenance" to shake the loose wire back into place.;)

I threw that away because the thing was loaded with roach eggs and it wasn't worth the hassle of cleaning.

now why would you throw away a perfectly good crt?

same reason why the other guy threw away a perfectly good lcd.

That's kinda what I was wondering too... what if the LCD craps out on you after a few days? No sense in throwing away a working monitor.

Exactly - he upgraded to something better and didn't feel it was worth his time to try and sell the old one.

Exactly, there are starving children in India who could code for a week on your monitor.

But seriously, could be a problem that only shows up in use. My old NEC 19" CRT had the shakes, but not all the time only when it was drinking heavily.

The paradoxical nature of this thread is melting my synapses.

People do this because they don't know how to troubleshoot. I got a guy in BIG trouble last year for throwing away an ultra expensive 26" CAD monitor because it wouldn't turn on. Instead of calling IT, he put it in the trash and ordered a new one. I happened to see it in the refuse heap and was like "WTF? These things are under warranty still!" So I pulled it out and tested it- it had a broken power cord. I just put a spare PC cord on it and it fired right up (in fact, we're still using it).

He was one of those snobby asses so of course I reported him to accounting to put him in his place. I wish I was there when he had to explain an unneeded $8000 equipment order :D

cause mine was a 15", about 6 years old, and I had to turn the brightness all the way up to max to get a good picture on it... besides, I hated ho wmuch of the table it took up...

i see your point - maybe the lucky bastard was gifted a 21" LCD

Still...why would you toss the 17" lcd...even if you were to lazy to sell it, LCD monitors don't take up to much space. It'd make more sense to toss it in the closet as a backup.

Your monitor is different...no one wants to buy a 15" CRT anymore, especially not one with an iffy picture. They cost more to ship than they're worth.
