A wildlife rescue place is your best bet. They have the expertise needed to raise him until he's old enough to be released back into the wild.

this happened at our house. we found a baby bird sitting on the driveway, unable to fly away, starting to get covered in ants. we called a friend who was an animal lover and she happened to know of a local wildlife rescue place. i called them up and they told me to put an old t-shirt in the bottom of a shoebox, put the bird in and then cover it up and drive it over to them.

when i got there they took the bird and informed me that he would be fine. he would be fed and cared for and eventually released back into the wild.

they said he was a baby cardinal and most likely what had happened was that he either fell out of the nest too early or the parents were killed.

FYI - I recently learned that after 2 weeks in the nest, the baby cardinals jump out before they're ready to fly. The parent birds will bring them food for another 10 days or so.

I watched that happen recently. I put 1 of the babies back in the nest just to watch it hop out again so I had to look it up. Even more interesting, there was another nest of some other kind of bird that getting too crowded with the babies, so then after a week of the cardinal's nest being empty, the other mommy bird somehow moved it babies to the cardinal's nest. 😱 :awe:

Look to see if there is a Wildlife Hotline where you live and call them.
