Found a hidden surveillance camera at school....

I run the lights and sound for our high school auditorium and have access to some rooms that most students don't even know exist. Earlier I went to one of these rooms to put away a spotlight and happened upon a full video surveillance setup, with a wireless video receiver, time lapse video recorder, and vga capable tv. The guy I was working with helped find the camera, which was conspicuously placed in the hallway disguised as a fire detector, minus the blinking red lights, a little off center, and with a little hole for the camera. I was pretty shocked to see this and am now wondering if this is perfectly legal for a school to do this without informing students or if this is some kind of privacy violation. While this one was placed in a pretty seldom used hallway it leaves me wondering if there are other cameras placed around the school as well. Anybody know anything about this?

I would bet its legal. If its monitoring a public place inside the school (hallway) then you really dont have a reasonable expectation of privacy. Finding one in a bathroom is another matter.

I am an editor actually...but it would never get published as it is pretty censored.

I'm sure it's legal. They may have had vandalism or theft problems in that hall (because it's seldom used).

I believe as long as it doesnt record sound its legal, at least in MD video taping is legal without knowledge, but if you record sound you have to notify the party.

It would be a big deal if it is in a locker room or restroom. That would be illegal and would probably end up in some jail time for someone.

we have 1...2.. 14 known cameras and prolly some more unknowns at my high school. Thats pretty sweet what you found though. Tell all your friends that you saw some ATF jackets in there too. Should atleast scare some of the potheads :D

Don't tell the students, tell the teachers about it. The teacher unions of most states frown on video cameras in the schools. ;)

My school has cameras around also, but they all seem to be right out in plain view, like hanging down from the ceiling. I don't really care about the ones inside the building, though I like the ones outside monitoring the parking areas, someone messes with your car, dents/scratches, or whatever, it makes it easy to catch them. Though the parking lot cameras also seem to discourage most of that type of stuff.

Here's my two-cents; you do as you wish.

You found that one camera...and a wireless setup. The same people that the administration trusted to setup that one camera in a legal, public place, are the same people that get those really sweet hidden camera vids and post them on the net.

I would check the locker rooms and bathrooms. Can you find out what frequency that wireless transmitter operates on? It should be on a sticker on the back of the reciever. Shouldn't be too hard to see what else in transmitting on that band....get my idea?

Your school may have the best of intentions. I'd bet money that some skeezeballs, the ones who set the stuff up, dont'. Be paranoid; you have perfect reason to be.
