I was watering the plants yesterday and I found a huge spider web near my back door in the corner, so I decided to poke the web with a stick to see what kind of spider would come out and a black widow came flying out of it hiding spot and started attacking the stick. I normally would have killed the thing but I find this black widow intersting, dunno why. Tonight I came out to see if it was there and I saw a huge moth caught in its web and the spider was all over it. I had a hard time getting a decent picture because of the location and the lack of light.

Picture its kind of big.

Edit: Resized the picture to 1024x768

I found a huge overgrown Wolf spider in my house a few days ago but I knew it wasn't poisonous when I saw it because I see those spiders all the time. Sure hope I never have any poisonous spiders in the house.

Did you see the red "hourglass" on it's belly? I think there's another species of spider out there that looks outwardly like a Black Widow, but lacks the hourglass and the poison.

I know spiders do a lot of good (they kill bugs!!) but any poisonous spider near a home is a bad thing waiting to happen. MHO.

No, seriously, kill it.

Why?!?! It's not hurting you. I'm sorry, but people who kill animals out of irrational fears are stupid.

I didn't see any red hour glass on it's abdomen. Could you take a picture of it so we can verify it is a black widow?

Irrational? A black widow bite can kill you, and they often do.

I have seen nasty brown recluse spider bite pics.

What are the differences between black widow and brown recluse spider bites/venom?

Which poisenous spiders live in Portland, OR?

If memory serves me correctly, I believe the Black Widow's venom is a nerve toxin, which effects your brain, while the Recruse's venom is a corrosive venom, which does what we have all seen in that nasty pic.

The brown recluse is just nasty. It lives in Portland, Seattle... :)

The black widow bite is bad, but not that bad... :)
You may not always feel the black widow spider bite at first.

The first sign of a bite is a small local swelling.

There may be two small red spots in the center of the swelling.

After three hours or so, the site of the bite becomes more painful.

Common reactions include an overall ache of the body, in particular the legs.

Other symptoms include alternating salivation and dry-mouth, paralysis of the diaphragm, profuse sweating and swollen eyelids.

In severe cases, a headache, elevated blood pressure, nausea and perspiration could occur.

The poison injected by the the Black Widow bite can cause abdominal pain similar to appendicitis as well as pain to muscles or the soles of the feet.

In most cases symptoms disappear in two or three days.

Calcium gluconate is used intravenously to relieve and relax muscle spasms produced by black widow venom.

The victim of a black widow bite should go to the doctor immediately for treatment

And seriously, if it is a black widow, KILL IT NOW. When they have babies, they have hundreds, and you stand a chance of having a house full of them... I wouldn't take the risk... there are plenty of other non-lethal spiders to eat bugs for you.

I would side with MacBaine on this one. We had an infestation in our house once...ick. :|
