Found a bird

I found this bird in my uncles backyard. He was going to leave it as it alone but I took it in becuase i thought it may be killed by a cat or a racoon. I asked his neighbors if it belonged to them (because it has a tag on its foot) but no one claimed it. What kind of a bird is it? A pigeon? A dove? And what should I feed it? Generic bird seeds?

It is a dove.

It will eat regular millet birdseed, but if you are going to keep it you should get pigeon food, which should be available at any good feed store(Not pet store, feed store... like that sells horse etc stuff...)

Why can't it fly? Is it obviously hurt? Will it let you hold it?

If so, gently spread each of its wings out and examine them for damage.. Be gentle, it could have a broken wing. I'm not entirely sure how to tell if a wing is broken, but I'd imagine that it would not let you open its wing if it hurt severely. If it makes any noise, definately stop.

It may just be sick and not have enough energy to fly. Give it lots of fluids and keep it warm.

Let us know how it goes.

I never saw an all white pigeon, so I'm going to call that a dove. no information on the tag, I guess..

google tells me regular gray doves eat 95% seeds and plant parts and prefer seeds that are on the ground. 🙂 seems to me pigeons'll eat anything.

if you want to keep it take it to the vet. and wash your hands, birds are dirty.

I dont know if they have any feed stores in north jersey, but I will check out some local pet stores. It didnt look obviously hurt to me and it did let me hold it. Ill check for broken wings tomorrow, as the poor this is sleeping right now.

no, but I wash my hands a fair amount, like after I use the bathroom and before I eat or prepare food.

I also wash my hands if I had to touch things that have been laying around outside and after I take out the trash.

You do realize that a normal keyboard has more bacteria on it than the bird does, don't you? or a door handle, better go wash your hands again.

The door handles in my home are clean and I'm not worried about stuff on my keyboard.

I'm not really too worried about stuff IN my home, because I know that stuff is for the most part clean.

as for outside door handles I carry paper napkins that I put on door knobs before I use them.

I push elevator buttons and door bells with my knuckle. Is that wierd?

Sounds like a homing pigeon (doves = pigeons, I believe) since it's letting you hold it. See if you can find a registry somewhere online and look up the info on the bird's tag.

??????

I own a parrot.
Oh, I guess that makes you an expert on bird-borne bacteria. 😛

I'd agree with the wash your hands comment, but not necessarily the "birds are dirty" comment. They're no more dirty than a dog.

Just keep it warm, and make sure it has plenty to drink. Give it fresh water every day. Put some bird food in there.. it will start to eat if it feels better.

If it lets you spread its wings, they're fine. Since it has a tag, it's probably from someone that owns a group. Or maybe it was released from a wedding or something, lol.

I had a pet pigeon that I caught when it was a baby. I taught it to fly in the attic of our house. 😀 It took about a week before it could finally fly back and forth.

I decided to let it free.. 'twas sad. 🙁

I don't want to know what is on your keyboard.

Put it out of its misery. A few good whacks with a shovel and its off to the trash can in a plastic bag. That's what I do with injured birds. Especially pigeons.
