Found a 1978 VW Bus for $900...(Didn't get it...)

You CAN'T register a car in California without having current smog. The owner is lying to you, or you left out information.

Damn, you saw the wrinkle! I rear ended someone years ago. He stopped at a green light on a rainy day. I hit the breaks but [SLAM]. He split the scene after the crash. Never had it fixed..... 🙁
edit: The tire up front helped tremendously!

 
are you buying it as a daily driver? or as a play toy?
In CA your emmision standards are way higher than the rest of us. You probably have alot of work ahead of you to get a smog sticker. On the other hand, the price is right (as long as the body is straight), and with a little work, you can get the sticker 😉 ....
 
You couldn't pay me to drive something where I sit in front of the front wheels and the engine. They're sweet though. I'd love to have one if I wasn't afraid of loosing the entire lower half of my body :Q (knock on wood) 😛

A little of both. I have a real daily driver, my 84 Volvo. But my wife and I have wanted one since we were teens (long before we met). I've driven a few, belonging to friends, and am aware of the flaws, but the feeling you get driving one is amazing. I'd love to drive Roger's with a much more powerful engine. 😉

I've checked emissions parts for this thing and they're easily found and very cheap. Short of a new engine (and those aren't too expensive either, compared to more "modern" cars), smogging will be dirt cheap.

I'm still waiting to hear back from the seller. Once I find out more, I'll pass it out...

Sorry to crap, but what's so amazing in driving a tiny bus? Of course, I never drove it. But even if I did I don't think I'd go apes over it. Is it the space inside you need or what? Sorry for my remark, I just don't quite understand the issue and I'd like to understand why people like these buses, even though they seem to compromise their safety.

Honestly. Drive one. Find one, even a newer one, at a used car lot or something.

It'll kinda be like the first time you rode a motorcycle. There's a kind of sense of being able to see everything at once, a sense of freedom, I guess? Hard to explain. Just try it.

There really is something different about driving a rear-engine vehicle. And the bus in particular, the front wheels are under your ass so you have to adjust to the steering. It's just plain fun to drive.
As for safety, people die every day in the most modern vehicles, Just stay alert. These buses have very solid chassis. As noted in my previous post I rear ended someone quite hard in my bus and all it did was wrinkle the front end.

I've had a full size van most of my adult life, it's sort of fun to look down on the smaller vehicles.

Passengers in vans usually freak out when you pull up behind someone, feels/looks like you're going to rear end them.

I'm on the fence about the safety in a bus, freaking high speed accidents @ intersections are getting awfully common. I personally don't plan on buying anything without side curtain airbags. But VW buses have a serious amount of Karma.
