If you find pictures of the base, both before and after, you see that the ammo had large walls around it. So all the explosive power went up into the air.
Sad and funny at the same time. No wonder we're the laughing stock of the world when it comes to education and literacy. Don't tell me you're a real "Prof."
You're the dumbass here. The powers-that-be declared that all facilities in Iraq would be protected by 13 foot concrete barriers to protect against indirect fire attacks. The barriers have wide bases and are interconnected so they are fairly strong. At the very least, the ammunition was kept behind those but also probably dirt berms to, just as ProfJohn says, direct the force of any unintentional blasts skyward.
Actually, I'm kidding. We just stacked ammunition crates next to our tents. I slept on a 155mm shell -- makes a great pillow!
