I know people will say, "pay and you will get fast servers." But it isn't about me or other people being cheap. There is a real danger that Anand's forums will lose their diversity and power if they continue to throttle back the speed for non-paying customers. Instead of a widely diverse base of many users all throwing out information, it will become a small exclusive club with way fewer ideas and information. Do you want your information coming from a base of thousands of users, or from a few hundred?

The past few days the forums responsiveness on my cable modem has been about comparable to a 14.4 modem. The wait is intolerable. I am tempted to pay the money, but guess what, there are other players like Fat Wallet which are very similar and still very responsive.

If you honestly think that Anand is "throttling back" the bandwidth for the free servers you are sadly mistaken. Anand is simply no longer making the constant upgrades in bandwidth that the free servers had at one time. The forums are slowing because of more users, not because of bandwidth cuts. You try keeping a message board with 80,000+ members running snappily.

As far as your diversity argument goes, it's BS. Almost every user whose opinion is worth hearing is attached enough to AT that he or she is not about to leave.

Finally, take this up in Forum Issues if it really bothers you that much.

Oooooo, a threat to leave. I'm sure that Anand is highly worried about this and is currently working on a special scheme to satisfy you.

Well, I know you said that it wasn't because you were being cheap, but people get what they pay for. The forums are not unusable, even though it has been slowing down a bit. If you pay you will get the instantaneous load of the forums you want. If you are on here for free, you're going to get the spare bandwidth after the subscribers use theirs. Think of it as charity. People won't leave because of speed, unless it gets so slow that pages need 15+ seconds to load on a common basis.

Besides, if you went to FW would you get funny mod quotes like in my sig? :)

looking at the servers that these forums have, and how few people it can take before slowing(~450) makes me wonder what kind bolt uses, right now ~3600 people are logged on there

Yes the forums are slowing down, but you get what you pay for. Just be happy that you still get service...and it's free. Creednet went down a few days ago, and my sister is pissed. So we are pretty lucky. Don't worry, be happy... :)

To me the mod quotes aren't really that funny. I have never laughed at one; once on a blue moon will I grin at one. I just find them...uhmm "interesting" is a good word. Does anyone else think that the quotes aren't that funny?

Good day, Good night, and ...

pay for content is here to stay, not just here but on the web as a whole, the free lunch is over. On the plus side, perhaps we'll
all see the dot.com's really striving to put out quality content and see less drivel.$30 a year is a bargain for what's offered here imho:)

If you don't like it, leave or can it. I don't want another 50k threads about how unfair it is that you now have to pay for good access. I don't pay, and thus I can't complain when the forums take a long time to load.

But look at all the BS you have to put up with there. No ads here, especially the kind that get in the way of the "content" like over there. I hate ads.

I think some are funny (that one in particular), but they dont make me laugh.

I dont consider this "pay for content" because I dont get any different content than the non-subscibed members. I pay for extra features. Slight difference, but one I needed to make before I subscribed. :)

piece out homies or whatever it is people say now....

I am very happy. Cost me $30 but I got that back in one deal. A bargain isn't the word, it is a steal! ;)
