I get these ideas to start new forums, to try and push my way into a particular Internet market. So I put a lot of time into starting a new forum with its own theme and graphics, its own domain name.
But it is really hard to get a forum started. People don't join empty forums - and without people, it is hard to get enough content into it for people to find it in the search engines.
A lot of experience people have suggested vBulletin as a board software - decent features, good support. I always tell myself I'll pay for it when the forum grows enough. But is it really worth buying a license for each domain?
What do you think - could a single Forum of a more generic design still attract the same kind of people I want on the dedicated domains? They're not even closely related topics. But the advantage is, once I have a member, they're a member across all the sub-boards. There would definitely be some cross-topic posting.
