I've lost 3 boxes, 60 threads, and possibly days of work due to "VM hypervisor failed to enter an online state in a timely manner."
I thought all the VM non-sense had been worked out already. Can't even start Oracle to trouble shoot. Moving on to other tasks. 🙁
 
Bummer, Tony! I definitely need to make some time to school myself in VBox, though there hasn't been a lot of breathing room between these competitions!
 
Hrm if the next project is VM based, I can't participate because I am running my servers using a Xen hypervisor which doesn't work with VirtualBox. So what is it? I haven't really been following, because I have tons of uni assignments upcoming
 
The current project is Moo Wrapper, which is mainly a GPU project. I think Tony might have posted in the wrong thread.

We are holding on to #2 in the sprint and a solid #6 in the marathon.🙂
Pretty amazing considering the Pentathlon is getting most of our racing resources. 🙂
 
@petrusbroder, you are probably aware of the following, but just in case, or for others:

As moowrapper is a frontend to distributed.net's RC5-72 project, you get not only points at moowrapper, but also at distributed.net. However, team affiliation at distributed.net is to be configured separately from moowrapper. I wrote up the steps for joining distributed.net's team AnandTech here.

(Team affiliation at distributed.net does not have any impact on the Formula BOINC race though. I.e. this is purely optional, just a nice gratis side-effect for the TeAm's standings in the RC5-72 project.)
 
Wow, so many options on the Moo preferences. Anyone have a suggestion for what to put here for 1070's and 1080's and for AMD R9-280X's? I'm leaning toward the auto setting. Looking through the forums for info, so far it seems everyone is using an app_config instead of mentioning these settings.

Nine more hours of Einstein.....it's about time I got ready to act like a cow. Moo!
 
I sent in my one task so I could also join distributed.net for TeAm Anandtech. Can't find myself just yet, but 12,500-ish points for 30-ish minutes, not bad. 🙂

Scratch that. 6,584 points for 18.5 minutes on a 280X, with 4 seconds of CPU usage.

The remaining points came from dual 1080's which were NOT set to receive work, and which also downloaded one CPU task, against my preferences.
Adding insult to injury, the CPU was used for 100% of the time, resulting in a run time of 15.5 minutes for 2 1080's and a core, but for only 6144 points.
My Moo! may have contracted Mad Cow.
I did read in the forums that you can't benchmark/compare these tasks though, as each task has a mind of it's own, so to speak.

But do watch out for rogue CPU task downloads, we need all the CPU elsewhere.

Woohoo! Y'all can quit crunchin' them cows now! 2nd place in our league, 3rd place overall (Gridcoin 1st, EVGA abandoned the 5athlon and took 2nd).

Man, I hadn't noticed the extra noise from the GPUs until it was gone. 😀 Certainly noticed the heat though. Glad that's gone too.

Time to let the GPU's cool down and just try to burn up the CPU's as we finish off the Pentathlon.
 
In past years (when there were no Sprints) we had at times during the year paid attention to how we were doing in the Marathon and would make a push maybe on a project that needed to stay at the top and then one or two people would volunteer to try to keep it there.
It was toward the end (maybe two months before the end) that we made concentrated strategic pushes. These were like a sprint except they were INTENSE at the very end.

There are 20 Sprints and 42 projects where the TeAm could gain "Formula" points.

We currently have "Formula" points in 23 projects. We could loose all 227 of those points.
We currently have 94 "Formula Sprint" points - we cannot lose any. So our total points are 321.

Sometimes during the year I will look at Formula standings to decide what project to help while I move to a new personal Milestone there.
First I look for a project that I like.
Then I look for a project that what little points I can make will help advance it or keep it from being passed. For example: how fast is SETI@Netherlands catching up to us in Leiden Classical? If they pass us it is 7 points lost.
I look at if there are TeAmmates that don't watch Formula BOINC crunching it keeping it in place, then I am not needed there.

There is a team close behind in DENIS@Home.
It would not take much to gain 2 points in VGTU@home.
We should watch that we keep our place in Yoyo.
If a few TeAmmates did 1 or 2 Climate Prediction WUs per month we could climb a spot.
This year I moved my MOO points from 50M milestone to 100M with one 280x, which is a big part of where we are Marathon wise. And we are now close to passing the team ahead of us.

It is hard to devote all year to Formula BOINC. The last month is fun and so are the Sprints.
 
@GLeeM , thanks for the interesting insights! I may study your post and possibly make some adjustments. All these competitions as a relative noob have left me a bit dizzy and undecided as to what to do next.

Bump for anticipation of today's sprint announcement. I've put off an upgrade that will have 12 cores down for at least a week, in the case that this might be a CPU project...
