Forming an LLC in New Jersey

Anyone know where I can go about doing this? I do contracting work with 1099's but now I want to start webhosting my customers and billing them monthly, and I can't do this as contracting 🙂

Any idears?

you can form it online through the new jersey state website.

you must have a registered agent physically located in the state of new jersey. that person's information becomes public, and so is all the information that you put on the articles of organization. PO boxes are not acceptable. you can use your own address - just heed the above warning. PMB's are not acceptable.

there are several companies online also that can assist you in this matter.

NJ Small Business Administration

Nolo is a good place to start and research forming a LLC.

Every state is different. For the most part it is a very simple process. All that need to be done is prepare and file "articles of organization" with your state. I believe NJ calls them "certificate of formation".

The cost varies from state to state also. In Ohio, the cost is $125 for example.

You may want to explore the idea of form a LLC out of Delaware for tax purposes...just an idea🙂

there's a good nolo book on how to form a non profit, that is a big help - it helps with basic questions, about directors/members/officers, verbage for the articles, and applying for tax exemption.

the companies that help you form your business aren't necessarily a waste - they do assist with some basic questions, even though they cannot give you legal advice.

delaware still has annual taxes for LLC's and corps. nevada, however does not. delaware does have better business friendly laws.

EDIT ok i take some of the nevada part back. there are some annual registrations for NV corps and LLC's, however they do not have franchise taxes like DE.
