Former (senior) employee wants me to get in touch with him

I've been working for a major financial publication for the last 8 months & have been rated as an 'A' employee.

Today I received 2 calls (one being a voice mail) from the secretary of a former employee, let's call him John. He held a senior position at my company and joined a big name international financial publication a couple of months ago. She said that John wanted me to call him on his cell phone, either during business hours or (stressing this point) after business hours.

John and I had been on pretty good terms before he left and knew that I was really into online advertising. Coincidentally, John was recently promoted as the US head of online advertising at his company.

So hmmm, I'm thinking this is an ambush job offer

What do you think? :cookie: for those who are right - will update this thread once I talk to him later on today.

Update: Yes, it's a job offer - I just don't know whether this is a good time for me to switch or not since my gf is pregnant & that'll mean I'll have to give up a lot of freedom (long lunches, mornings / afternoons off, etc). Also, I'm about a year away from finishing off my MBA thru evening classes. There's a decent pay hike but the job will be a lot of work - I'm guessing I'll need to put a 10+ hour work days on a regular basis. It's a management position, so shit's always gonna flow uphill - not sure whether I need all the extra stress in my life right now.

He's about to get fired and needs references to find a new job?

...

No, sounds like he's trying to hire you.

He thinks he has a 'computer virus' and you are into that computer stuff.... haha

Good luck.

He is going to pick your brain for info and then use your ideas to make him a shitload of money

if he's nice you'll receive dinner for your troubles 😉

Unless you were sociable before, he wants to pick your brain.

Possibly for a slot with him.

It's a job offer/courting. Make him chase you and get the money. Call after business hours and after dinner. If it seems like probing for information advise just a little bit. If he keeps pushing say "is this a job offer?" and chuckle. That will make it very firm and clear that you do not give advise or consulting for free.

You are in control of this opportunity. What you will do with it and how well you make out is up to you.

But, just in case, bring your kneepads.

Nope, OP is in the control position. John is in charge of a new departement at a new company and needs to bring in a few people he can trust to build his empire and doesn't really care what it costs. If OP plays it right it will be an incredible opportunity that doesn't come along very often.

He just has to play it right. He'll be very well paid and very well protected from day one.

But OP still may want to bring some kneepads.

What the hell???!!!! I think you have your roles reversed.

John is sucking Vonkhan schlong, this is what is called protocol. If anybody is wearing kneepads it is John.

Learn to play the game. I keep trying over and over to help this board to learn how to play the game.
