Former FF user - turned Opera user now toying with going back?

I have two grips with Opera.

1. I can't acess my Gmail account through gmail.google.com. It just hangs up while connecting to the website, after entering my login info. Oddly, I used to have this same problem with FF on another computer. Probably just a coincidence. I'm forced to use Opera's Pop3 mail client, which isn't exactly bad. Actually, I like it a lot however sometimes I need/want to access the website for account management. I have to open FF in order to do so.

2. I want to be able to press ALT+ENTER to open a new tab. FF does this very well. If you type a new dress in the address bar and press ALT+ENTER it opens it up in a new tab. I want to be able to do this in Opera.

Does anyone know ways (plug-ins?) to fix these things? Much appreciated

I don't have any problems with gmail?

Shift enter to open a new tab in opera or shift control enter to open a background tab.

Much easier to just use the pop client, so no real issue here? I just tried and successfully logged in manually to the website, so now I have to wonder what version you use?

I'm sure there is some way to go about that, I know there are alternatives. Certainly not a reason to go from the best browser to the 2nd best. Especially with how much better Opera is over FF.
 
On point number one, you might want to make sure you're giving gmail the correct user agent. They have a lot of browser specific code and the few times I've tried Opera I vaguely remember it defaulting to pretending to be IE, which would get you lots of ActiveX. Report the correct one and at the worst, I think, you'll just get a dumbed down version but at least it'll work.

Thank you for pointing out that Opera has that feature, I didn't know it did. It still, however, stops loading (ironically) with a page with the word "Loading..."

That does that to me too. Usually it's when I'm behind a corporate firewall.

If you could tell us which version you are using and any firewall you might be running? I don't have this issue.

I just pinpointed my problem, and it's not with Opera. It's with Proximitron, which I'm using alongside Opera to block ads. I guess that's another thread in of itself. :-\
 
I think I might go back to FF because I was worried about how much Proximitron was affecting my web browsing. That was before I even had any idea it was the cause of what I thought was a seperate issue.

Besides I think adblock does what proximitron does but it's built in.
 
My problem with gmail is that the auto-fill typing your TO: person doesn't always work. Actually, it doesn't work 75% of the time. Something to do with javascript.

The other thing is ctrl-enter doesn't complete URLs. Those are my 2 biggest problems but I'm staying for good. Everything else is just too good.

yea...i hate how the auto-fill for TO in gmail works sometimes, but doesn't other times...it's annoying!
 
I have been using Opera 9 for a couple of months and i will be going back to firefox when my copy of xp pro 32bit comes in and FireFox 1.5 comes out. Mainly for 2 reasons, adblock and Cookie Culler. Opera's cookie management just does not come close to firefox with cookie culler extension. They also do not have an extension like adblock. Everything in opera either has to sit in the tray (proximitron) and/or you have to copy/paste the link into some ini file and nothing that is free integrates as well into the browser like the adblock extension does with firefox.

Otherwise opera is the better browser, but the advantages of those 2 extensions will pull me back to firefox.

BTW, where is the option to not make the new tab steal focus when you open a link in a new tab in opera 9?

It shows you how good of an extension it really is and how something that works as well as adblock is wanted in Opera, take a look at the forums, it is a wanted feature.

As an UPDATE: I HAVE switched back to Firefox, exclusively. I have also found a few more extensions which are awesome, in my eyes, and justify my switch back.

IETab<Click>: I used to use IEView which would open a page up in IE. Whereas IETab opens a Tab in FF that utilizes IE. Sweet! I like that a lot.

Isn't the point to using the alternative is to NOT use IE?
 
I never thought AdBlock was any better than Proxomitron. Proxomitron is configured when you install it to block everything, and it works with every browser. It also has the capability of tunneling the HTML to your browser faster. Not to mention you can customize it anyway you want to replace whatever HTML with whatever else. I don't miss AdBlock in the least.

Not every webpage is FF friendly. You know that. I know that. IETab takes care of it. It's a done deal.
