Well. He is now on a funerary train, on his way home to Montreal. Tears flooded my eyes when the whole crowd began singing O Canada and then the 19-gun salute started gently rattling the windows of my 7th-floor appartment. As the hearse was leaving Parliament, the crowd spontaneously gave him one last applause and people throughout the city kept applauding all along the way to the train station. He will arrive in Montreal around 11am and later today will lie in state at the city hall. Security measures (e.g. sniffer dogs, welding manhole covers, etc..) are being implemented around the basilica for his state funeral tomorrow as many foreign dignitaries, for example Presidente Castro, are going to be in attendance. In particular, Mr. Trudeau was very liked in the Caribbean countries.

For people in the US who may have trouble understanding what brings such an outpouring of emotion amongst the generally reserved Canadian people, I'll just say this: he was our JFK.

I hope that there won't be any ugly incident due to separatists in Montreal. It would take only a few extremist bad apples to give the people of Quebec a bad name. And that would be unfortunate.
