ATLANTA (CNNSI.com) -- Former major leaguer Ken Caminiti says he was on steroids when he won the National League Most Valuable Player Award in 1996, according to an exclusive report in this week's issue of Sports Illustrated.

But even though it left him with health problems that continue to this day, Caminiti defended his use of steroids and told SI's Tom Verducci the practice is now so rampant in baseball that he would not discourage others from doing the same. Caminiti told Verducci that he continued to use steroids for the rest of his career, which ended last season when he hit .228 with 15 home runs and 41 RBIs for the Texas Rangers and the Atlanta Braves.

I thought it was common knowledge that 85 percent of MLB took vitamin S. Other sports are no better. Steroids are really common in high schools and colleges.

I don't think it is but he says that most of the players use some kind of illegal performance enhancer.

I've partied with Caminiti (we went to the same High School though I had graduated by the time he was a freshman)and Steriods wasn't the only thing he used. His best friend in High School was a Coke Dealer.

Give Caminit credit for coming clear with it. All the other steroid users deny it (except for Canseco, I guess). Look at Bonds. He entered the league weighing 170 pounds. Now he is 235. No man can put on 65 pounds of muscle between the ages of 23 and 37 without using steroids. They don't test for any drug in MLB.

At Cal, I knew a lineman that gained 110 pounds while at Cal. He used to smoke pot to calm down from all the steroids. His assistant coach helped him beat the drug tests. If this is happenning at Cal, it has to be happenning at every NCAA football program. It sucks because it is almost to the point where if you want to compete in certain sports you need to take steroids. I don't think you can be a football lineman without it.

I heard a bit of this on the radio on my drive over to Taco Bell for lunch. He doesn't sound like the sharpest tool in the shed, but he was humbled, and very honest in that phone conversation.

well i think hes a better person than Conseco, who is just because he was getting too old for baseball got thrown out and now is crying like a baby.. he is going to ruin other players lives by naming names, basically stabbing them in the back. Its ridiculous he was the last word and whenever Jim asked him something his everyother answer was "youll read it in the book, jim". Grrrr
