Exactly, I re-ghost all my machines to a clean registry state with all the basic apps every 6 months when I feel things arn't acting as they once did. Havn't done a clean new install since windows 2000 was released..

The only problem is having to back up bookmarks, mail and installing newer apps and games.

I'd get all the drivers you need beforehand. Don't forget to save any word documents, umm patches for stuff maybe. I also think there is a way to keep folder/desktop/performance settings saved but I've never experimented with that. Good luck, do me proud son!

next time, put your system on a seperate partition, so you can only wipeout the system partition and look in the program-partition what apps you need to re-install.

All I can think of would be "My Documents" then and you can even move that :)

I just re-formatted after almost 3 years on my win98 box. It's back up to speed again. I had installed and uninstalled so much crap and the registry looked like sh!te. Was starting to crash too much. Nice having a new clean install.

Looks like you about got it covered except possibly any password files you keep. I use Password Agent and there's a single file I back up for that.
